A wolf.
The philosophical views I have imbibed are idealism and existentialism. Idealism
shaped my behavior and views that examines the connection between epistemological
idealism (the human knowledge is constructed by human thoughts) and ontological idealism
(the view that epistemological idealism delivers truth because reality itself is a form of
thought and human thought participates in it). By this, I have become more an idealist and
visionary person that dreams of being a better person of the society. Whilst, existentialism
refers to the truth is subjective. No one has the monopoly of truth. As an existentialist, this
philosophical view focused more on the freedom of a person and the authenticity of an
individual, and this view centers on how a person makes meaning of his/her own life.
In scientific views, however, different social sciences influenced how I perceive the
things around me. From sociology, to anthropology and psychology. Sociology is the study of
social behavior, social institutions, and the culture. Anthropology on the other hand, is the
study of the development of culture, society, and the humans themselves. Whilst psychology
is known for the definition of the scientific study of human behavior and mental processes.
These specific scientific views about humans, culture, and behavior have shaped my
perspective towards mental health, the society and other social institutions, and the
development of humans. I believe that these sciences have principles and concepts that can
help develop one’s consciousness about him/herself and could aid the society’s issues and
problems.
The three major learnings that I have acquired in the first module are as follows: the
philosophical views of oneself and the difference between the concept of “self” and “identity”,
the different factors that could affect and influence an individual’s life such as social factor
of the self, environmental factor of the self, hereditary factor of the self, and person-volition
factor of the self, lastly are the two philosophical lenses such as the empiricism and
rationalism. First, I have learned the difference between self and identity. These two
concepts are often confused with each other, but in reality, self deals with the course of your
own identity and how you see yourself. To understand oneself, he/she should demonstrate
critical and reflective thinking in analyzing the question “Who Am I?” Identity on the
other hand are the characteristics you acquire and how society sees you. Next learning are
the four factors that could affect one’s self. First factor is the social, it refers to the
influences of significant people in a person’s life. Family, peers, and organizations are the
most common factors that affect one’s self in the context of social influences. Next is the
environmental factor where influences come from physical and communal elements present
in our day-to-day surroundings. Third is the hereditary factor that affects the physical
attributes through biological processes. Lastly is the person-volition factor that refers to the
uniqueness of a person and his/her personality and characteristics from the others. This is
brought by life experiences that change certain behaviors and perspectives. Lastly, I have
acquired the knowledge on how I see myself in philosophical views. Empiricism, based on the
definition in the given powerpoint, derives explanations of the self from sensory and bodily
responses. We know things because we have experienced it through our bodily senses.
Rationalism, however, says that there is innate knowledge; they differ in that they choose
different objects of innate knowledge, according to the powerpoint. Empiricism is basically
the knowledge of an individual that is derived from experiences in his/her life. Whilst
rationalism is the knowledge derived from logic and reasoning. Rationalists believe that
genuine knowledge is certain because it is rational, and not empirical. I personally believe
that I am an empiricist for I believe that significant experiences and experimentations in
life are the source of knowledge that can be very useful to one’s character development. And
I believe that I am an empiricist for I am an advocate of mental health, social justice, and
gender equality, I believe that I came to my conclusions and advocacies due to life
experiences that I have encountered for the past 19 years of my existence. Because of these
experiences, it has resulted in knowledge that I use to educate myself for growth and the
individuals of the society.
