SPC Autoplot

This document contains instructions for using an autochart to monitor a manufacturing process. It outlines steps for an operator to input specification limits, process capabilities, part and measurement data including date, time, operator ID and individual measurements. Measurements are analyzed against control limits to monitor the process for potential issues that may require action.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE USE OF THE X hi/lo-R AUTOCHART
STEP 1: The quality associate places the upper spec limit (USL) in cell E37 and lower spec limit (LSL) in cell
E38.
STEP 2: Based on previous sampling, or knowledge of the process, estimate the maximum expected roundness
of the part if a diameter ( parallelism if length). Place this value in cell E42. This value may be re-evaluated
after the study.
STEP 3: Place part number information in cell B25.
STEP 4: The spreadsheet is set up for control limits at 75% of the tolerance (capability of 1.33) These any be
manually changed to increase the capability, if necessary, by making the changes in cells E40 and E41 and
observing the results in E44.
STEP 5: The operator must insert the date in ROW 26 starting in cell B26. They can use the "Date Stamp"
function ( [Ctrl] [;] ) rather than typing in the date manually, if desired.
STEP 6: The operator must insert the shift (if applicable) in ROW 27 starting in cell B27.
STEP 7: The operator must insert the time in ROW 28 starting in cell B28. They can use the "Time Stamp"
function ( [Ctrl] [Shift] [;] ) rather than typing in the date manually, if desired.
STEP 8: The operator must insert their identification (operator number, initials, etc.) in ROW 29 starting in cell
B27.
STEP 9: For diameters, the operator will measure around the circular section of the part (do not measure up
and down the diameter, it captures error from taper - not related to tool wear). For lengths, measure the entire
surface to capture parallelism. Insert the largest measured value into ROW 32 starting at B32. Measure the
smallest measured value into ROW 33 starting at B33. The range will be calculated automatically.
STEP 10: place any comments in ROW 35 starting at B35, such as start stop for break, tool change,
adjustment, etc.
