School Health Program
1. Introduction :
School health program is an integrated set of planned activities and service designed to promote the
optimal physical, emotional, social and educational development of students and staffs. This program
should be supported by families and local communities since it is based on their needs, resources,
standards and requirements. This program is conducted and supported by a multidisciplinary team and
accountable for the comprehensive development of the health status of the children by ensuring
preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative health service to them.

Health and learning are inextricably intertwined. For the better performance in the studies and also for
overall development it is necessary for a child to be a healthy. In our context being a developing
country, we don't have sufficient infrastructure and resources. They also don't have facilities for regular
physical health checkup and assess to health information for the prevention and proper treatment. Due to
these various constrains and limitation school childrens are facing various sorts of health problems like,
nutritional problem, infections diseases due to poor hygine, violence, drug abuse, sexually transmitted
diseases including HIV infection, unintended pregnancy, dropout from the school, disrupted family
pressure. Similarly there is also a high chances of spreading the communicable dieases.

These various problems have serious negative influence in their studies as well as effect their physical
and mental health development. It also influence greately on the social and emotional well being of the
childrens. So by conducting the school health program we can address their problems by providing the
opportunity to have assess to information and by giving regular health examination service for the
timely treatment of the health problems.

1
School health program is a promising approach to address these concerns. It is also a cost effective
approach for improving the overall health status of the school children. promoting the health and well
being of children and adolescents is a generally regarded to be important in our society. because they
lack the resources, knowledge and skills to function independently. It is also important to realize that
the children and adolescents of today are the productive citizens of tomorrow who have a great
responsibility for their nation, so it is all an investment focused on the most valuable resources i.e. on
our youth who are the future builders of this nation.

School should play an important role to prevent and promote the healthy behaviour of the students and
also to cure and rehabilate their health issues, if they are suffering from any of such problems. So for
addressing such things school health program helps to achieve this goal.

2. Rational
The Importance of school health program can influence the health and well being of students since it has
a great influence on the children.

Health and learning are closely interrelated. If the students have good health and the environment
within the school is safe, clean and healthy then it well have positive influence in the learning process.
As such, health was place first with regards to the objectives of education.

School is also the very susceptible place for the spread of communicable diseases, so we should be
concerned about the health status and wellbeing of the students, which can be ensured by regular health
examination and by providing sufficient information.

In various literatures we could find that, student who are not healthy, suffers from an undetected vision
or hearing deficit, or who is hungry, or who is impaired by drugs or alcohol, is not a student who will
profit optimally from the educational process, Likewise, an individual who has not been provided
assistance in the shaping of healthy attitudes, beliefs and habits early in life will be more likely to suffer
consequences of reduced productivity in later years.

It is a costeffective approach from which we can get outcome with minimum resources.
