This is a compilation of the test items which featured in the National Exams of the English
language between the years 2009 and 2014. This work is a joint contribution of a group of
dedicated ELT teachers who voluntarily devoted some of their valuable time to provide large
portions of typed test items. They had painstakingly examined many exam sheets, located
specific test items, and typed, edited and shared them with the community. The idea of
compiling Bac. test items was launched by Mr. Hamid Qabbal who conscientiously took care of
managing the flow of the contributions and posting them on:
https://eflclasses.com
We, the members of the ELT community in Essaouira, express our deepest thanks to this group
of leader teachers who gave example of productive collaboration and commitment.

Materials of previous Bac. National exams are rearranged in this complication on the basis of
the major language areas and components they represent. The aim is to provide teachers with
sufficient material for practice exercises on the type of language items and structures that 2 nd
Bac students are likely to encounter. This material is available in hard exam copies, but these do
not lend themselves to extensive use through all the phases of learning language items and
structures.
This compilation supplies examples of exercises that can be used in the controlled practice
phase, in reviews for quizzes/tests, and in consolidation and remedial sessions that follow the
correction of quizzes/tests. It also provides voluminous and flexible material to be used in the
final preparation for the Bac exam. The malleability of the material in this document, which
was granted by Word processing, allows various selections and rearrangements of the items.
One can use the items in the arrangement proposed to offer students repeated and voluminous
practice of the target item or structure, or can make a varied selection of items to train
students on answering exam-like questions. Some sections, however, like the ones on
vocabulary and word formation, do not allow such a variety of uses as they are in principle
designed to assess students’ understanding of a variety of lexical items.
Here are a few ideas on how to use this material in order to ensure wider exploitation and
achieve optimum efficiency:
● Teachers need to browse through the sections so as to have an idea about what question
types are used to assess different language items and structures.
● They need to communicate this to their students while they are working on the exercises so
as to feed their expectations and enhance their performance.
● students need to know that some structures are tested in two or three different ways.
Linking words, for example, are tested by means of gap- filling, sentence combination and
sentence completion.
● Students need to know that some structures are tested in direct and indirect ways. Here is
an example about past modals:
indirect question: 1. I can’t find my car’s keys. I must ………………………… them at home.
leave -- be leaving -- have left
● Students need to get familiar with the type of questions provided in the exam specifications
in general and with the type of questions which have featured in previous exams in
particular. This can be achieved by using these question rubrics in quizzes and global tests
and in classroom practice exercises and home assignments.
Many of the test items in this material can be repetitive and redundant if used in a linear way
from first to last sentence. Teachers need to select a variety of instances which represent
different forms, meanings or functions of the target item/structure. The following sentences
test students on similar forms of the passive voice.
There is in fact little learning time to go through all the instances, so only one of these
sentences can be used in the classroom while the other one can be assigned for homework or
can be used in quizzes or tests. The aim should be using the valuable classroom time to give
students practice on a wide variety of instances of the exercises related to every language
lesson.
These test items are decontextualised instances of language use. They offer meaningless
manipulations of language. Students may learn how to make certain transformations
immediately after the presentation of the structure in question, but may not be able to figure
out the same manipulation in a different situation if they do not understand the meaning and
function that particular grammatical form serves.
The idea here is that we need to provide opportunities for meaningful use of the language we
want our students to learn. For example, we can ask students to rewrite a few sentences (test
items from the compilation) into the passive. Then we can ask every group to write a short
story starting with one of the sentences in the exercise. All their sentences should be written in
the passive voice. We may ask students to insert funny incidents, which they generally love and
find amusing. The following sentence can be extended into a short paragraph.
[A new library will be built in our neighborhood. Old books will be bought. Broken tables will be
brought. Old chairs will be used. Old people will be employed. No internet and no electricity will
be installed….]
Students will like the fun side of the story and may forget to use the passive voice form. The
role of the teacher is to remind them of the linguistic task beside the communicative task. It is
in such contexts that students are likely to perceive the function of the passive voice and hence
see its realization through the form. Writing funny anecdotes is one way of activating students’
understanding of grammar forms. Other ways can be personalization (students write about
themselves using the target structure), writing funny poems (if I were a headmaster, I would….;
If I were a teacher, I would…), describing a classmate and asking the peers to identify the
person described (by telling a story about that classmate in the past). Using language forms to
communicate messages and interact with peers allows for a deep understanding of the target
language point and helps it pass from short-term to long-term memory.
It is difficult for a teacher to check if all the students make good manipulation of the forms of
the target grammar point. One of the techniques that may allow wider opportunities for both
