This document provides instructions for an experiment on measurement uncertainty. Students will use a scale to measure the dimensions of images of a wheel and cube. They will record their measurements and calculations in tables, determining values like diameter, radius, area, length of sides, volume, and associated errors. Calculations will include determining relative and percentage errors to analyze how uncertainty affects measured values.

Lab-1 Sheet: Measurement Date: …… Name: …………………………………….

This investigation is based on concepts of Uncertainty in Measurement.

You will be assessed based on Criteria- Analysis (6 marks)

Analysis: This criterion assesses the extent to which the student’s report provides evidence that the
student has processed and interpreted the data in ways that are relevant to the research question.

Appropriate and sufficient data processing is carried out with the accuracy. The report shows
evidence of full and appropriate consideration of the impact of measurement uncertainty on the
analysis.

Method: You are provided 2 images below. Use a scale and measure its dimensions. Carryout
necessary error calculations using least count. Determine relative and percentage error. The
observation tables are provided. You don’t have to print. Keep zoom level 100% and record the data.

(you may use 15cm or 30 cm scale as per availability)

For Outer diameter

All measurements in meter

(1 cm = 10-2 m)

Range of scale used

(Like 0-15cm or 0-30cm)

Least count of scale (cm) [Note least count

the smallest measurement that your device
can make]
Error/Uncertainty value (take half of least
count like “± (1/2 * least count)”

Diameter of Wheel measured vertically

(Trial-1) [A]

Diameter of Wheel measured horizontally

(Trial-2) [B]

Average of both the diameter in [A] and [B].

Average radius of wheel

Area of the wheel (Area of circle)

[Use average radius to calculate area]

(Use all units as S.I)

Calculation of Uncertainty in area (Use below Hint).

dA dr
Hint/Formula: If A=π r 2 , then we can write =2∙
A r
What is the percentage error (relative percent) for area?

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

What is the absolute error for area?

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Write the correct expression for area of wheel including the absolute error.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

What happens to area if radius is halved?

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Below we are provided with a cube. We are required to determine its volume and absolute error
in volume. (Note: There will be error as it is a soft copy, but we shall ignore them for now)
