Essentialism: To Be An Effective Essentialist Leader, Mckeown Recommends 5 Mantra
Essentialism: To Be An Effective Essentialist Leader, Mckeown Recommends 5 Mantra
Amid today’s unprecedented crisis and uncertainty around almost everything, we may
forget which is better for us and really matter in next normal. Greg McKeown’s book
on The Disciplined Pursuit of Less is apt for current situation and I have summarised
learnings in 8 pointers differentiating essentialist from non-essentialist:
1. Cut out every task that does not directly further your goals.
2. Non-essentialists believe they can have it all. Essentialists identify the most
productive trade-offs and decide where to go all in.
3. Non-essentialists regard sleep as a blip in their schedules.
4. Your most important priority is guarding your capacity to set worthy priorities.
5. Nonessentialists have criteria that are too accepting, while Essentialists reject
90% of all opportunities.
6. Essentialists fight their innate urge toward “normative conformity.”
7. The Nonessentialist says yes to escape “social awkwardness” and “pressure.”
The Essentialist says yes only to essential things.
8. The Nonessentialist focuses on solutions. The Essentialist identifies and gets
rid of obstacles.
