Tutorial Problem Set
1. An odd-shaped tank weighs 50.5N when empty. When filled with water the total
weight is 1555N. Determine the volume of the tank.
2. A super-tanker can hold 400m3. What is the mass and weight of the cargo if the
tanker is filled with crude oil? The density of oil is 700kg/m 3.
3. The mass of a golf ball is 46g and its mean diameter is 42mm. Determine the
density and specific gravity of the material.
4. The density of mercury is 13600kg/m3. Calculate its specific volume and specific
gravity.
5. Lubricating oil has a specific gravity of 0.89. Calculate its density and specific
weight.
2. A mercury barometer reads 760mm at sea level and 750mm on the top of a
mountain. How high is the mountain above sea level? Assume a constant
density of air of 1.2 kg/m3 and the specific gravity of mercury to be 13.6.

4. The hydraulic brakes in a motor car are worked by a plunger pump of diameter
2.0cm. The four-wheel cylinders are of diameter 3.0cm each. If the operator
applies a force of 35N at the plunger, what will be the force exerted at each
wheel cylinder? Assume that all components are at the same horizontal plane.

1. Determine the mass flow rate of water through a 30mm diameter pipe if the
average velocity is 2m/s.
3. In a hydraulic system, oil with a specific gravity of 0.92 flows at a rate of 2.5 X 10 -
3
m3/s. Calculate the mass flow rate of oil in kg/h.
6. A 300mm diameter pipe carries 170m 3/h of water. The pipe branches out into
two pipes of 100mm and 200mm diameter respectively. If the average fluid
velocity in the smaller pipe is 2m/s, what will be the average velocity in the
200mm pipe?
