Process Safety Notes

When a superheated liquid is released to the atmosphere, some will flash to vapor while some may remain suspended as an aerosol. The remaining liquid and parts of the aerosol may fall to the ground in a "rain out". A runaway reaction is a thermally unstable chemical reaction that accelerates without control, leading to a rapid rise in temperature and pressure.

RAIN OUT - When a superheated liquid is released to the atmosphere, a fraction of it will flash into
vapor. Another fraction may remain suspended as an aerosol. The remaining liquid, as well as
portions of aerosol, may "rain out" on the ground.

RUNAWAY REACTIONS - A thermally unstable reaction system which exhibits an uncontrolled

accelerating rate of reaction leading to rapid increases in temperature and pressure.
