Heat and Mass Transfer Tutorial
Tutorial – 2
2.1 Compute the heat loss from the surface of a furnace wall 25 cm thick. The Inner and
outer surface temperatures are 300 oC and 50 oC respectively. The conductivity of
the wall material is given by k = 0.002T – 10-6 T2 where T is in oC and k in W/m.K.
Also determine the average value of conductivity in this range.
2.2 A plane wall of thickness 0.1 m and thermal conductivity of 25 W/m.K having
uniform heat generation of 0.3 MW/m3 is insulated on one side while the other side
is exposed to a fluid at 92 oC . The convection heat transfer coefficient between the
wall and fluid is 500 W/m2.K. Determine the maximum temperature in the wall.
2.3 When passing an electric current I, a copper bus bar of rectangular cross-section
(6mmx15mm) experiences uniform heat generation at a rate q (W/m3) given by
Q = aI2
Where a = 0.015 W/m3.A2. If the bar is in ambient air with h = 5 W/m2.K and its
maximum temperature must not exceed that of the air by more than 30 oC , what is
the allowable current for the bus bar.
2.4 A long cylindrical rod of radius 10 cm consists of a nuclear reacting material (k=0.5
W/m.K) generating 24 kW/m3 uniformly throughout its volume. This rod is
encapsulated within another cylinder whose outer radius is 20 cm and that has a
thermal conductivity of 4 W/m2.K. The outer surface is surrounded by a fluid at 100
o
C, and the convection coefficient between the surface and the fluid is 20 W/m 2.K.
Find the temperature at the interface between the two cylinders and its outer
surface.
2.5 A 1 cm diameter 3 cm long steel fin (k=43 W/m2.K) transfers heat from a wall at
200 oC to a fluid at 25 oC with h = 120 W/m2.K. Determine the rate of heat transfer
from the fin for the case in which the tip is insulated and thermal radiation effects
are negligible.
2.6 A fin 0.6 cm thick and 5 cm long has its base on a plane plate at 100 oC . The
environment is at 20 oC . The conductivity of the fin material is 60 W/m.K. Value
of h is 50 W/m2.K. Calculate (a) Temperature at the end of fin (b) Temperature at
middle of the fin (c) Total heat dissipated by the fin (d) Effectiveness of the fin.
2.7 A very long rod 20 mm in diameter has one end maintained at 150 oC. The surface
of the rod is exposed to ambient air at 25 oC with a convection heat transfer
coefficient of 10 W/m2.K.
(a) If the rod is fabricated from pure copper (k=400 W/m.K), what is the heat loss
from the rod? If the rod is fabricated from stainless steel (k=14 W/m.K), what is
its heat loss?
(b) Estimate how long the rods of these two different materials must be in order to
be considered infinite.
2.8 Aluminium fins of triangular profile are attached to a plane wall whose surface
temperature is 250 oC. The fin base thickness is 2 mm, and its length is 6 mm. The
system is in ambient air at a temperature of 20 oC, and the surface convection
coefficient is 40 W/m2.K
(a) What are the fin efficiency and effectiveness?
(b) What is the heat dissipation per unit width by a single fin?
2.9 An engine head on a motor cyle is constructed of 2024-T6 aluminium alloy (k=190
W/m.K). The head is in the form of a cylinder that has a height of H=0.15 m and an
outside diameter D=50 mm. Undser typical operating conditions the outer surface
of the head is at a temperature of 500 K and is exposed to ambient air at 300 K,
with a convection coefficient of 50 W/m2.K. Annular fins of rectangular profile are
typically added to the head in order to increase heat transfer to the surroundings.
Assume that five such fins, which are of thickness t=6 mm, length l=20 mm and
equally spaced are added. What is the increase in heat transfer from the head due to
addition of the fins.
2.10 Annular aluminium fins of of rectangular profile are attached to a circular tube
having an outside diameter of 50 mm and outer surface temperature of 200 oC. The
fins are 4 mm thick and 15 mm long. The system is in ambient air at a temperature
of 20 oC, and the surface convection coefficient is 40 W/m2.K.
(a) What are the fin efficiency and effectiveness?
(b) If there are 125 such fins per meter of tube length, what is the rate of heat
transfer per unit length of tube?
