Tutorial

Arc Flash Analysis


CYME 7.0 Power Engineering Software
A self-contained study file (.sxst) to use with this tutorial is provided. The explanations below are based on the use of that file.

 Settings

1. Before starting this tutorial, verify that the path for Arc
Flash labels is set correctly.
Select the File > Preferences menu item and click on the
Configuration Files icon. Scroll down the Application
Folders list to select the Arc Flash Labels folder. Browse
for the CYME installation directory ( ), then the
Templates folder to find the ArcFlashLabels folder. Select
this folder and then click OK in the Preferences dialog
box.

2. Open the self-contained study ArcFlash.sxst.


3. Access the Arc Flash Hazards analysis through the
Analysis > Arc Flash Hazards menu option.

 The Distribution/Transmission Analysis Tab

The main objective of the analysis of arc flash hazards in distribution systems is to identify the Cal System
value of the Node/Bus ID.
1. Click on the Distribution / Transmission Analysis tab.

2. Under Method to Calculate Incident Energy, select Lee Method.
3. Under Arc Gap and Working Distance select NESC 2012 Default.
4. For the Clearing time, select User Defined and input 96 ms.
5. Under Network select TUTORIAL.
6. For the Short-Circuit Method select Conventional.
7. In the Node ID/Bus ID column select node N2.

8. In the Display tab make sure that the Color


Coding is as displayed. The Cal System is based
on the NESC-2012 standard. This color coding is
available for the Distribution Analysis only.

9. Click on to run the analysis.


10. Once the analysis has run properly, click on
to get the report of the analysis, then
click OK.
To display the appropriate color coding on the OLD
make sure that you select Arc Flash- Cal System as
your color coding.

 Industrial Analysis Tab

1. To be able to run an industrial arc flash analysis In


CYME 7.0, you will need to first identify the nodes
to be considered as the ones located in an
industrial workplace.
2. Locate node N2 in the one-line diagram.
3. Double-click on the selected node to access the
node properties dialog box.
4. Under the Arc Flash Tab check “Include in Arc
Flash Analysis” and input a clearing time of 96
ms as well as the other parameters as shown and
click OK.
5. Access the Arc Flash Hazards analysis through
the Analysis > Arc Flash Hazards menu option
and select the Industrial Analysis tab.

6. Under Networks, select TUTORIAL.


Only the node N2 should be automatically displayed in the Node ID/Bus ID list. Select the node.
7. For the Short-Circuit Method select Conventional.

8. Now, click on .

9. Once the analysis is complete, the Results tab will be automatically displayed.

 Results

1. The results can be displayed three different ways:

a) Click on to display the Arc Flash Report


dialog box where you can select the
nodes/buses for which you wish to see more
detailed results.

b) Click on to
display the Arc
Flash Chart dialog
box where you can
select the
nodes/buses for
which you can
generate chart
reports.

c) Click on to
generate warning
stickers that can be
printed onto special
weatherproof
adhesive paper.

Note: To customize the protective clothing information printed on the stickers, access the Arc Flash
Clothing dialog box by clicking on the Edit button in the Clothing by Risk Category group box
while in the Arc Flash Analysis dialog box.

Once the Arc Flash Clothing dialog box appears, you can either type in your own text or click on the
Default button to display default text associated to the Risk Level chosen.
