Qgis Exercise Lab1

This document outlines laboratory exercises for a Geographic Information System (GIS) course. The objectives are to create a basic map in QGIS showing point, line, and polygon features and export it. Students will learn about key cartographic elements, data types, and file formats. The procedures instruct students to open QGIS, add vector layer shapefiles and download OpenStreetMap data. Students are also directed to change layer colors and visibility scales. The document discusses symbology, symbol layers, and ordering layers.

Geographic Information System

OBJECTIVES

In this laboratory exercise we are expecting to do a basic map by a software (GIS)

allowing users to analyze and edit spatial information, in addition to composing and exporting
graphical maps. QGIS supports both raster and vector layers; vector data is stored as either point,
line, or polygon features.

 Make a map showing point, line and polygon features and export it.
 Understand the key cartographic elements that must be present to allow interpretation
of a map
 Know what some of the key data types and file formats
 Import pre-cleaned vector data into QGIS and navigate basic QGIS features

PROCEDURES

1.Open QGIS. You will have a new, blank map.

2. Look for the Add Vector Layer button  Add vector layer and add all the different
.shp files found on the epsg4326 folder. The output would display like this:
3 Install the OSM Downloader found on the Plugins tab.
4. Click the osm, input the following data, and save the resulting .osm file.
5. Open the osm. File through Add Vector Layer button. When a dialog opens, select all
the layers except other_relations and multilinestrings layer.
6. Zoom in to the part where dots appear.

Loading Vector Data from Shapefiles (Module 3)

 Add SpecialLite Table  New Dialog and click the land_use data base file and open it
 Click the 3 layers and Add.

 Click on this icon:

(If you’re sure you can’t see it at all, check that the Manage Layers toolbar is enabled.)

It will give you a new dialog. In this dialog:

 Click the New button.
 In the same folder as the other data, you should find the file landuse.sqlite. Select it and
click Open.

You will now see the first dialog again. Notice that the dropdown select above the three
buttons now reads “land_use.db@...”, followed by the path of the database file on your
computer.

 Click the Connect button. You should see this in the previously empty box:

Re ordering the Layers

 We need to move the places and into water layer to the top of the list to be visible.

SYMBOLOGY
is the application of graphic symbols—varied by color, size, and other properties—to
represent geographic features on a map. In ArcGIS Desktop, symbology is set on
the Symbology tab of the Layer Properties dialog box

CHANGING THE COLORS

 To change the urban layer, inside the dialogue click the Style in the left. We can
change the color of this layer and I choose the color “gray” color and click OK.
SCALE BASED VISIBILITY
Map detail is determined by the source scale of the data: the finer the scale, the more detail.
Source scale is the scale of the data source (i.e. aerial photo or satellite image) from which data
is digitized (into boundaries, roads, landcover, etc. in a GIS).
 Click the road and right click, Click the properties  Go to RENDERING TAB
Check the checkbox: Scale dependent visibility  Click the minimum scale
1:100,000 click OK.
Adding Symbol Layers:
 Go to the Symbology tab of the layers’s properties panel.
 Select Fill. Then, click the + symbol layer button.
 For the new simple fill, set the border style to No Pen. Change the fill style to something
other than Solid or No brush.
 Click Ok.
The picture below shows what map looks like without the extra symbol layers.
Ordering Symbol Levels
1. Select the Line layer in the panel, then click Advanced  Symbol levels…
2. Select Enable symbol level.

Symbol Layer Types

 Go to Symbology tab on the layer’s properties panel.

 Select the Simple marker layer, then click the Symbol layer type drop down.

DISCUSSIONS

In this module we introduce the QGIS project itself, as well as explaining the
user interface.

After completing this section, you will be able to correctly identify the main
elements of the screen in QGIS and know what each of them does, and load a
shapefile into QGIS.
