Module - Types of Angles and Angle Pairs

This document defines and describes different types of angles. It identifies six types of angles based on their degree of measurement: zero, acute, right, obtuse, straight, and reflex. It also outlines four types of angle pairs: complementary, supplementary, linear pairs, and vertical angles. Finally, it discusses three types of angle pairs formed when lines are cut by a transversal: alternate interior angles, alternate exterior angles, and corresponding angles.

TYPES OF ANGLES

Angle – is a figure formed by two rays (called as sides of the angle) which
share a common endpoint (called as vertex of the angle).

Note: An angle is most commonly measured in degrees. The larger the degree,
the wider is the opening of the angle.

Types of Angles:

Zero Angle exactly 0 °

Acute Angle greater than 0 ° but less than 90 °

Right Angle exactly 90 °

Obtuse Angle greater than 90 ° but less than 180 °

Straight Angle exactly 180 °

Reflex Angle greater than 180 ° but less than 360 °

Angle Pairs:

1. Complementary Angles – Two angles are complementary if their

angle measurements add up to 90 °.
2. Supplementary Angles – Two angles are supplementary if their angle
measurements add up to 180 °.
3. Linear Pair – are two adjacent angles whose non-common sides form
opposite rays. A linear pair is always supplementary.
4. Vertical Angles – are the angles opposite of each other, and share a
common vertex. Vertical angles are always congruent.\

Angle Pairs formed by Lines cut by a Transversal

5. Alternate Interior Angles – angles on the opposite side of the

transversal, but inside the two lines the transversal intersect.
Alternate Interior Angles are congruent if and only if the lines cut by
the transversal are parallel.
6. Alternate Exterior Angles - Similar to alternate interior angles,
alternate exterior angles are also congruent to each other if and only if
the two lines intersected by the transversal are parallel. These angles
are on opposite sides of the transversal, but outside the two lines the
transversal intersects.
7. Corresponding Angles - are the pairs of angles on the same side of
the transversal and on corresponding sides of the two other lines.
These angles are equal in degree measure if and only if the two lines
intersected by the transversal are parallel.
