UNIT 1
Starting Points for the
Understanding of Culture, Society,
and Politics

I. INTRODUCTION
In our modern world, it is important to pay attention to the interplay of culture, politics, and society.
These elements are essentials in understanding human behavior and social groups against the backdrop of
globalization and industrialization. Hence, students as individuals and integral members of society are
expected to value their roles on society, apply the knowledge they learned from school, and translate their
gained ideas.
How then are culture, society, and politics related in everyday life? Each person interacts meaningfully
with one another as members of society. Culture encompasses the meaningful processes and products of
these social interactions. People likewise interact in society as individuals and as groups with duties and
privileges. In the exercise of duties and privileges, a person as a member of society engages in political
activities.
The best way of transforming the ideals of students into action is by letting them discern challenges into
positive endeavors. This can be done through the proper understanding of the dynamics of individuals,
institution, and other major players in society. It is therefore imperative that students must be well-equipped
and well-informed individuals who are familiar with the disciplines of political science, anthropology, and
sociology at learning aids in locating lesson introduces the students to the dynamics of society and politics.

Environment and history are two of the primary factors that shape the behavior of human groups.
This behavior, which serves as adaptive tool for the varied stimuli projected by the environment, is

behavior form human traditions, which are passed from one generation to the other.

A. INTRODUCTION

What influences changes in society, politics, and culture?

when they were your age? You might be surprised to find out that the
technologies you are enjoying at the moment are unavailable back then.
Now, laptops, cellphones, the internet, and all other forms of
communicative devices are available to facilitate easier communication
and knowledge-sharing. While these have made life easier, the so-called
technological age has given rise to a new set of culture and identity
formation among the youth that is far different from what has been
developed in the past. Based on your observations and personal
experiences, what are these changes? Do they build or destroy cultural
practices and traditions?

LESSON 4
Social, Political, and Cultural Change

A. INTRODUCTION
What issues and events in our country concern you today?
Society in its broader sense involves social, cultural and political realities. As a formal
and systematic studies of society, these three facets are referred to as “the social
sciences”.
The study of society can be accomplished in three different ways;
 By mapping the social forces impinging on social actors as their lives intersect in
society;
 By rehearsing the structures and components of cultural practices and traditions;
 By exposing the asymmetrical power distributions among members of social
communities and organizations.
These attempts – different and unique in their basic assumptions about what makes
society possible and the network of relationships that define and constitute it – are made
due to a common concern: to understand the dynamics of interactions in society. These
attempts are formally referred to, notably in the academe, as “disciplines” because of their
specific perspective or focus.

B. DISCUSSION

Anthropology is derived from two Greek words

anthropos and logos, which intensively studies human
and the respective cultures where they were born and
actively belong to.
 It is considered the father or even grandfather
of all social and behavioral sciences like
sociology, economics and psychology, to
Franz Boaz
name a few.
 The father of American anthropology, Franz
Boaz, a physicist, strongly believed that the
same method and strategy could be applied in
measuring culture and human behavior while
conducting research among humans including
uniqueness of their cultures.

Culture. The sum of an individual’s way of life,

ranging from the food he or she eats, the clothes she
wears and the house where he lives.
Goals of Anthropology
 describe and analyze the biological evolution
of mankind
 describe and assess the cultural development
of our species
 describe, explain, and analyze the present-day
human cultural similarities and differences
 describe and explain human biological
diversity today. Sociology is the study of society, social institutions,
and social relationships.

Specifically, sociology tackles the basic unit of the

society—the family; the functionality and relevance
of state as an important human institution; social
issues on religion, crime, race, social class; and the
stability and instability of societies

 The origin, evolution, characteristics and

functions, dimensions and basic social
institutions are studied.

 August Comte (1798-1857) is the person who

August Comte “invented” sociology in 1842, by bringing
together the Greek word socius or
“companion” and the Latin word logy or
“study”. He originally used “social physics”
as a term for sociology

 Focuses on the ubiquity (or the “everywhere-

ness”) of social forces in unlikely forms: sex,
gender, religion, class, race, ethnicity, sexual
orientation, and the like.

Society. Comes from the Latin word “socius” which

means comrade, companion or friend. Pertains to a
group of individuals involved in social interaction or
sharing the same geographical or social territory

Goals of Sociology
 understand ourselves better
 build a better understanding of mankind
 help with decision-making, both our own and that of larger organizations
 gather systematic information from which to make a decision, provide insights into what is going on in a
situation, and present alternatives

REMEMBER
“There can be no culture without society and so far
there are no known human societies that do not
exhibits culture”

Political Science is part of the social sciences that deals with the study
of politics, power, and government.
Political science is a social science discipline that deals with systems of
government, and the analysis of political activities and political
behavior. Primarily, it helps people gain an understanding on “who
gets what, when they get it, and how they get it.”
Politics is associated with how power is gained and employed to
develop authority and influence on social affairs. It can also be used to
promulgate guiding rules to govern the state. politics refers to “ the
process of making collective decisions in a community, society, or
group through application of influence and power” (Ethridge and
Handelman 2010, p.8).
Politics as Science. Science is commonly defined as the knowledge
derived from experiment and observation systematically done. Policy-
making and government decisions should be done through proper
research, social investigation, analysis, validation, planning, execution
and evaluation. Thus, politics is a science.
Goals of Political Science;
 be immersed in current affairs
 build an understanding on the local,
national, and international politics
 learn how political activities are
Anthropology Sociology organized in and out of our country
Culture  provide substantially critical and
Society scientific contribution to government
and society

VI. SUMMARY
In this module, you have learned that;

Cultural Variation is the variation in human conditions promotes diversity and plurality in cultural
traditions. This could lead to discrimination and ostracism.

It is important to know your own cultural and social backgrounds before knowing other people
There are seven terminologies w had discussed that has significant part I your life for a lifetime: gender,
socioeconomic status, ethnicity, religion, exceptionality, nationality.
A society’s culture is not stagnant. While new cultures may arise, common cultural practices are
continuously passed on through effective social interactions. Understanding the dynamism and
uniqueness of a specific nation entails familiarizing oneself with its cultural practices, political stances,
and social activities. The appreciation of such components helps build national character and identity
that further strengthens a nation.

Society cannot go undeveloped. People continuously socialize and build society based on social
interactions, cultural practices, and political activities. No society in the world today is the same as it was ten
years ago. As the world continues to develop, society and individuals adapt, thereby creating new avenues for
cultural expression and identity development.

If the perspective highlights the external influences that facilitate or constrain human actions, the
discipline is called “sociology.”
If the perspective underlines the role of cultural structures in organizing human interactions, the
discipline is referred to as “anthropology.”
And if the perspective zeroes in on power relations and how these produce layered modalities of
opportunities among social actors, then the discipline is called “political science.”
