I. Read the following extracts and answer the questions that follow.
1. The chowkidar of the garden is a very busy man.
a. Who is a chowkidar?
Ans: A chowkidar is a person who guards a place.
b. Why is the chowkidar busy?
Ans: The chowkidar is busy trying to keep out the naughty little boys and
chasing away the birds and monkeys that come to eat the fruits.
c. What trees are grown in the garden?
Ans: Mango trees are grown in the garden.

2. The mango tree is a tall and majestic tree.


a. Why is it ‘majestic’?
Ans: The mango tree is majestic because it is big and tall tree.
b. What is the mango fruit known as?
Ans: The mango fruit is known as the king of fruits.
c. What are the different things we can make from a mango fruit?
Ans: We can make pickles, chutneys, jams, flat dry sheets called aam papad,
mango-fool and rotis with mango flour.

3. The people of the town tell a story about how the town got its name.
a. What is the name of the town?
Ans: The town’s name is Hazaribagh.
b. What does the name of the town mean?
Ans: In Hindi Hazar means a thousand and bagh means a garden.
c. What story do these people tell?
Ans: The people of the town say that there was a mango garden with a
thousand trees in the centre of Hazaribagh.

II. Answer in brief.


1. What does the chowkidar have to do in the garden?
Ans: The chowkidar has to stop the naughty boys from plucking the mangoes
and chase away the birds and the monkeys who eat the fruits.

2. Which birds make their homes on the mango trees?


Ans: Parrots, blue jays and the little green coppersmiths make their nests in the
trunks of old mango trees. Owls live in holes high up in the trees.

III. Think and Answer.


1. Do you think that the children did the right thing by stealing mangoes from
the garden?
Ans: It is wrong to steal anything that belongs to someone. They should have
asked the owner of the grove to give them some mangoes.

2. Do you think the mango tree is a useful tree? Why do you feel so?
Ans: Yes, I think the mango tree is a useful tree. It is useful because we can eat
its fruits, we can use its raw fruit and ripe fruit to make many wonderful things.
We can also use its wood to make chairs and tables.
