Introduction:
The IELTS listening component is broken down into four sections, with ten questions per section. The
test takers are assessed using different situations, which they usually encounter once they go to an
English-speaking country. The conversations here are so realistic that students are exposed to actual
issues they may encounter as a foreigner living in an English-speaking country or a student studying
abroad.

General Rule:
Answers are only given ONCE although they are dictated SEQUENTIALLY. To do well in the
test, always read the questions ahead before the start of each section.

STEPS

1. Read the questions ahead.

• Highlight keywords
• Predict expected answers

2. Listen to the talk and write the answers initially on the questionnaire.
• Answers are only given once.
• They are dictated sequentially.

3. After the test, transfer the answers to the answer sheets.

• CAPITALISE all answers (EXCEPT if the answer is an email address or a
website)
• Write answers on the left-most part of the answer sheet
• The American or British spelling of certain words is accepted.

THE IELTS’ GOLDEN RULE

“Give to the monkey only that which the monkey wants — no more, no less.”

This rule requires test takers to write on the answer sheet ONLY the missing item. For
example:

Drill: Complete the following using the teacher’s prompt.

1. This class is given every _______________ .

2. Price of remote control: $ _________
3. _______ and _______
4. _______ or _________
5. _______ to _________
6. Farmers use ___________ covering to protect their plants.

Read the following and answer questions 1-6 above. The answers are found on the next page.

1. Please do not miss this class as this is very important. Do not forget that this class is only given
once a week.

2. Remote controls are very expensive nowadays. However, I got a good bargain as I only paid four
dollars for this particular remote control.

3. Only two fruits are allowed inside. These are apples and oranges.

4. You have two choices for your IDs. Either you bring your passport or your company ID.

5. The number of students is getting bigger. From previously catering to 200 students, our schools
are now catering to at least 350.

6. Farmers nowadays are very clever. To protect their produce, they use plastic wrapper.
