Sces3123: Organic Chemistry Practical 1 Reactions of Aliphatic and Aromatic Hydrocarbons
PRACTICAL 1
Reactions of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons
Objectives:
i. To study the chemical properties of an alkane, alkene and arene.
ii. To differentiate an alkane from an alkene and arene.
Instructions
You are provided with a set of video clips showing a number of experiments
conducted to study the chemical properties and to differentiate an alkane from an
alkene and arene.
Based on the video clips and Appendix 1, you are required to write a report on the
following reactions:
A. Combustion of cycohexane and cyclohexene
B. Reaction of cycohexane, cyclohexene and toluene with bromine
C. Oxidation of cycohexane, cyclohexene and toluene with acidified KMnO 4
Write a complete report on the experiments conducted to study the above reactions
A, B, and C, according to the format given in the course assignment. In the
introduction, outline the important theory behind all the reactions (in about half page).
Describe the procedures for each experiment, as shown in the videos. Tabulate the
results for the reactions (A), (B) and (C) and state the observations clearly. Discuss
the observations with reference to the chemical reactions that take place for each
test, and write the chemical equation for the reactions. At the end of your discussion,
briefly describe 2 important precautions that need to be taken when handling the
chemicals and list the scientific skills and scientific attitudes that should be applied
when conducting the experiment as shown in the video clips.
(Note: Your discussion must not exceed 3 pages). Write a brief conclusion of your
experiment. Finally, answer the discussion questions provided below. At the end of
the report, provide at least 3 references used following the APA format.
Discussion questions
1. You are provided with two reagent bottles which the labels have been removed.
Each bottle contains one of the following liquids:
i. C7H8 (aromatic compound)
ii. C6H8 (unsaturated hydrocarbon)
Devise a scheme of reaction by which you can identify each liquid using a
simple chemical test. You should name the reagent, give the essential reaction
conditions, the observations made and the conclusions drawn from the
observation.
