Course: Decision Science
Case Study

Case Study 1: Find the optimal assignment schedule

Jobs Contractor A Contractor B Contractor C Contractor D

I 10 24 30 15
II 16 22 28 12
III 12 20 32 10
IV 09 26 34 16

Case Study 2: The cost associated with each warehouse to market is given below . Find the
optimal transportation cost.

Market 1 Market 2 Market 3 Market 4 Available

Warehouse A 12 18 06 25 200
Warehouse B 08 07 10 18 500
Warehouse C 14 03 11 20 300
Required 180 320 100 400
Case Study 3: A company is making two products A and B. The cost of producing one unit of
product A and B is Rs.60 and Rs.80 respectively. As per the agreement, the company has to
supply at least 200 units of product B to its regular customers. One unit of product A requires
one machine hour whereas product B has machine hours available abundantly within the
company. Total machine hours available for product A are 400 hours. One unit of each product
A and B requires one labour hour each and total 500 hours are available. The company wants to
minimize the cost of production by satisfying the given requirements. . Formulate it as a LPP

Case Study 4: A confectioner sells confectionery items. Past data of demand per week (in 100’)
is given

Demand per week 0 5 10 15 20 25

frequency 15 10 10 4 8 1
Simulate the system for next 10 weeks and find average demand. Use the following random
numbers. 84, 06, 93, 38, 29, 59, 64, 18, 08, 45
Case Study 5: Customer arrive at a box office window, being manned by a single individual,
according to Poisson input process with a mean rate of 30 per hour. The time required to serve
a customer has an exponential distribution with a mean of 90 seconds.

Case Study 6: Solve the game

Player A Player B
B1 B2
A1 6 -3
A2 -3 0

Case Study 7: Faced with a new market opportunity management evaluated three courses of
action against sales level in the new market area as follows

Sales Probability Operate always Expand current Build new

operation capacity
Under 60,000 0.40 40 0 -20
60,000 to 0.50 50 -20 20
1,50,000
Above 1,50,000 0.10 60 80 100

Find the decision using i) Hurwicz Criteria (Hurwicz coefficient is 0.6) ii) Laplace Criterion

iii) Maximin iv) Minimax Regret

Case Study 8: Calculate the total elapsed time and the idle time of the machines

Job A B C D E F G
Machine A 3 8 7 4 9 8 7
Machine B 4 3 2 5 1 4 3
Machine C 6 7 5 11 5 6 12
