General Education Course: RHIST – Readings in Philippine History (3 units)

MODULE 2: Deciphering the Mood of the Historical Period

This module endeavors to equip you with knowledge and skills in engaging in content and
contextual analysis of historical sources. In order to realize this you will be required to study (the
provided) historical sources materials where you will have to do the analysis of primary sources of
historical materials, the historical text, and the interpretation of the author’s argument and point of
view on a given historical text. The following are the primary historical texts that you will have to read:

1. First Voyage Around the World


2. Customs of the Tagalogs
3. Kartilla of the Katipunan
4. Act of the Declaration of the Philippine Independence
5. Political Caricatures of the American Era
6. Filipino Grievances Against Governor Wood
7. President Corazon Aquino’s Speech Before the US Congress
8. Works of Luna and Amorsolo (Paintings)
9. Mga Gunita ng Himagsikan

Part I Course Outcomes and Learning Objectives

Course Outcomes

1. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in analyzing primary sources, historical text and
interpretation of the author’s argument and point of view.
2. Translate the knowledge and skills in the production of a portfolio or webpage that shows
evidence or application of the learning from the topics.

Learning Objectives: At the end of the module, the students must have:

1. Explained the texts/readings provided as primary sources of history.


2. Critiqued the author’s argument and point of view propounded in the historical text.
3. Identified memes/cartoons/caricatures that have political and social currency in times of
pandemic.

Part II Assessment

1. Write an essay summarizing something on either the: background of the author; background of
the historical document; the important historical information found in the document; and
contribution and relevance of the document in understanding the grand narrative of Philippine
history.
2. Come up with a portfolio (hard copy for Category 1 and online portfolio for Category 2 and
Category 3) of memes/cartoons/caricatures that have political and social currency in times of
pandemic.

the following:

A. Research on the background of the author


B. Come up with a summary of the background of the document
C. Do the content analysis of the important historical information found in the document
D. Cite the contribution and relevance of the document in understanding the grand narrative
of Philippine history
E. Describe your learning experiences while doing the aforesaid activities.

Your output in these activities will be the basis for your written quiz or related form of
summative assessment that your professor may/will give you.

3. As the main learning evidence for/under this module, do your portfolio (according to the
category of your connectivity). In making your portfolio (of memes/cartoons/caricatures that
have social and political currency) refer to “Political Caricatures of the American Era” by Alfred
McCoy where every picture/illustration has narratives or description detailing the background or
the issue behind it. You can follow the format or you are free to come up with your more
creative work (use your IT skills or propensity here).
