Lecture 1: Fluid Mechanics (Prof. Tafzeel Khaliq) On The Topic of Turbo Machines

The document discusses turbo machines, which are machines that transfer energy to or from fluids. Turbo machines can be classified based on whether they transfer energy to the fluid, like pumps, or take energy from the fluid, like turbines. They can also be classified based on the working media (liquid or gas), flow type (compressible or incompressible), and direction of flow, including axial flow, radial flow, or mixed flow. Axial flow machines have fluid flow parallel to the rotating shaft, radial flow machines have fluid passing through veins at a 90 degree angle, and mixed flow machines have flow that is neither fully axial nor radial.

Lecture 1: Fluid Mechanics (Prof.

Tafzeel Khaliq)
on the topic of Turbo Machines
Dated: 6/2/2020

WHAT ARE THE TURBO MACHINES?

The machines that are used to transfer energy to or from the fluid.

CLASSIFICATION OF TURBO MACHINES

1) It is based on the modes of transfer of energy.
a) Shaft power is being transferred to the fluid. E.g. Pumps.
b) Alternatively, we take energy from fluid like turbines, etc.
2) It is based on the working media (Liquid or Gas)
3) It is based on the type of flow (compressible or incompressible)
4) It is based on the direction of flow – Axial, Radial, or Mixed.

WHAT ARE THE AXIAL FLOW MACHINES?

The fluid flow is parallel (zero degrees) to the axis inside the rotating plate or shaft – which is
called axial flow. For example, Turbines, Axial Fans, Fans, etc.

WHAT ARE RADIAL FLOW MACHINES?

Here the fluid passing through veins/pipes is at the angle of 90 degrees. Discharge is in the vertical
position.

WHAT ARE MIXED FLOW MACHINES?

Angle is neither parallel (0) nor Perpendicular (90). The flow path is not radial nor fully axial.
