INSTALLATION AND MAINTENACE

FOR WORM GEAR COMBINATION SYSTEM

The following instructions give you the information you need to be able to correctly install and
maintain our Worm Gear Combination System

1 TRANSPORT, HANDLING AND STORAGE

Transport only in horizontal position; impacts shall be avoided.

Wear work gloves when handling the worm gear combination systems.
Store only in a horizontal position in closed rooms.
The surface corrosion protection holds for 3 months in closet packaging. Longer storage periods
require a special protective measures.
Our worm gear combination systems are supplied with two or three bolts used for keeping the
worm gear combination system close-knit during the transport ; we recommend their removal only
during the installation.

2 INSTALLATION

2.1. Cleaning the worm gear combination system and the mounting structure

Remove extraneous material from the supporting surfaces (including paint residue, welding beads,
burr formation, ect…).
Clean corrosion protection coating from supporting surface of the worm gear combination system.
In doing this, ensure that:
 Cleaning material does not penetrate into the worm gear combination system
 Cleaning material that attacks the sealing material is not used. Applicable cleaning
materials: clod solvents.

2.2 Lubricating the worm gear combination system

Worm gear combinations are supplied fully lubricated. They shall be greased again prior to initial
operation. Suitable grease types are listed on the table “Lubricants”. Inject grease into the grease
nipples one after the other while rotating the worm gear until a bead of fresh grease forms at least
on one sealing lip.

2.3 Choice of mounting bolts

Prescribed sizes, number and quality grades shall be used.

 Grip ration (length to diameter of bolt) shall be observed, from minimum 5 to maximum 10.
 Bolts with a fully threaded shaft are not permissible.
 Do not reuse bolts, nuts and washers..
In case of non-compliance worm gear function, lifespan and durability can be affected. Mounting
bolts are in normal cases adequately secured by correct preloading.

2.4 Choice of tightening torque

2.5 Fixing the worm gear combination system with bolts

The worm gear combination system shall be mounted in the unloaded condition.
Preload the bolts, crosswise in 3 steps: 30% - 80% - 100% of the tightening torque. When applying
a hydraulic fastening device, the tightening forces for preloading shall not exceed 90% of yield
stress.

3 MAINTENACE / SAFETY CHECKS AND LUBRICATION

3.1.Checking mounting bolts

To compensate for possible settling, it’s necessary to retighten the bolts to prescribed torque. This
shall be done without externally loading the bolts after the first 300 hours in operating and the
same inspection shall be repeated after every 600 hours in operating or 6 months.

3.2. Re-lubrication of worm gear combination system

Re-lubrication intervals depend mainly on the prevailing work and environmental conditions as well
as on the version of the worm gear combination system; under normal condition we suggest a re-
lubrication after the first 100 hours in operating. Suitable grease for our worm gear combination
system are listed in the table “Lubricants”. While rotating the worm gear combination system,
inject grease into all the cleaned grease nipples consecutively until a bead of fresh grease forms at
least on one seal or at the bearing gap.
The most frequent cause of failure of worm gear combination system is insufficient lubrication.
