Solving Quadratic Equations by Extracting Square Roots: Lesson 2
Solving Quadratic Equations by Extracting Square Roots: Lesson 2
LESSON 2:
It is important to remember that we can only use this property if the numerical
coefficient of the variable x is 1.
Example 1: Solve for the roots of the following quadratic equations by extracting the
root.
(a) x2 = 36 (d) t2 = 50
(b) w2 – 49 = 0 (e) r2 + 100 = 0
(c) y2 – 5 = 0 (f) (x – 9)2 = 64
x = ± 36 t = 50 x - 9 = ± 64
x = ±6 t = 25 2 x - 9 = ±8
t = ±5 2 x = 9±8
(b) w2 - 9 = 0
x1 = 9 + 8 = 17
w2 = 9 (e) r2 + 100 = 0 x2 = 9 - 8 = 1
w=± 9
r = -100
w = ±3
r = ±10i
(c) y 2 - 5 = 0
y2 = 5
y=± 5
