INTRODUCTION

A product range is a group of products that generally have something in common or complement each other in some
way. Say an iPhone, an iPad and MacBook air are a range, they all do different things but are related. Range refers to
a set of variations of the same product platform that appeal to different market segments.

In this project, we are going to work upon creating a range of wall clocks. Wall clocks are not just for keeping and
telling time either. Well definitely they are functional, but they can be stylish and fun too. Using wall clocks is a great
way to add some color, compliment your decor, or bring a whimsical touch to any room.
Wall clocks are different in many aspects like design, color or purpose. Nowadays we have seen modern wall clocks
have some what seemed to merge with the contemporary style of décor. Large Wall clocks are also slightly different
depending upon the requirement. Decorative wall clocks are considered a style statement by many. All in all, wall
clocks are worth your hard-earned money as they simply add to the ambience of a room. Themed wall clocks work
excellent in your children’s rooms.

Why is the intervention required?

Besides being just an element of design and décor, we want to revive its real purpose and its importance as a daily life
product. A wall clock is something that is placed in every interior, it may be home, shop, gym, office, different stations,
schools, colleges etc. So, our main purpose for this intervention is to revive its importance by just focusing on a
particular sector of its usage and need.

Many freelancers go through a lot of phases, working late nights, exciting projects, all the dedication required. One
more thing that is required which most of the freelancers’ face during their working hours is that they lack the skill of
time management, or I’d say they find it difficult to deal with the deadlines that are on their way. It is about balance,
most of them procrastinate, most common distraction from the task, which ultimately lead to the low-quality work in
many cases, or to be more precise, lower than the expectation. So, what we thought of coming with is the clock that
can reduce the stress level. How? Well, by keeping your list of the projects on track and prioritizing it, which is the
most important task to be done till today or tomorrow, that will keep reminding you the project that is on the bay in a
quite short intervals according to the user preferences. That would ultimately reduce in the stress level because you
know that your deadlines must be met. And also, how colors play indispensable part in our everyday life that we tend
not to notice. But it is present everywhere depending on our mood and how it affects our mood in every aspect of our
life and also, in our working life, to calm down the stress due to the list of projects kept at the bay. So, to leave the
stress of prioritizing the work and projects and just to focus on what their client needs and of course to focus on
creativity, this intervention is required for the users.

CLIENT PROFILE:

For designing the range of wall clocks, keeping in mind its purpose of intervention, we would like to define our target
market as people who work within a limited time frame. To be very specific about our client, our target consumers
would be the freelancers, who work within a design studio.

BACKGROUND RESEARCH

TYPES OF CLOCKS

4
MATERIALS:

Clock-faces are made of high-resistant glass-fibre supported polyester material to assure their long life even under
roughest weather conditions. Upon request the clock-faces can also be made out of stainless steel or copper. Cases
can be made of either plastic or metal. Microchips are typically made of silicon, while LEDs are usually made of
gallium arsenide, gallium phosphide, or gallium arsenide phosphide.

Plastic and composite materials are lighter and usually less expensive than solid wood. When a modern clock is covered
with a leather or an old-fashioned facade, it can blend in with more traditional decor.
Along with plastics and composites, modern clocks often have digital components made from other modern materials.
Microchips made of silicon, LED displays using liquid crystals and microwave receivers used to measure the vibrations
of atoms are all found in modern clocks. These clocks can have plastic, modern alloy or stainless-steel casings.

User Psychology:

Psychology about time management and stress

People like procrastinating. The most common distraction from the task is the occasional panicked glance at the clock,
that it can’t be possibly be late already, and so we see the power of deadline Obviously this stress = better
performance, only works up to a point, after which stress can have some very unpleasant consequences. Optimistic
assumptions tend to dominate planning and performance until the deadline approaches, and the actual reality of the
situation is harder and impossible to ignore. Human brain has a bizarrely optimistic slant when it comes to estimating
how long things will take to do & invariably underestimates. When deadlines are very close, we can exchange
accuracy for speed, which can lead to poor judgements and rely more on intuition. Sometimes deadlines help and
sometimes they don’t is through ideas of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Publicly committing to meeting a deadline is
also a powerful motivator because it puts reputation on the line. There are three moods in a day while working i.e.
positive affect activation, Positive affect pleasantness and negative affect Highest negative affect and lowest positive
affect can be seen early in the week and their best moods i.e. highest positive affect and lowest negative affect later in
the week. Likewise, low positive affect at the beginning of the day & end of the day, with a peak occurring somewhere
in the middle. And less positive and more negative affect in evenings. Levels of positive affect peak about midway
between the time we wake up and the time we go to sleep. Acro plane (peak time or time at which the peak of rhythm
occurs) at different times and show somewhat different curves over the course of the day.

Color Psychology

Positive affect activation - active, attentive, inspired, interested which can be represented with the colors like Red,
Orange, and blue

Positive affect pleasantness - Balanced, content, at ease, happy which can be represented with the colors like yellow,
green, blue, red, orange, yellow

Negative affect - afraid, angry, disgusted, hostile, irritable, jittering, nervous, shaky which can be represented with the
colors like black, dark red, green yellow.

USER STUDY

Working Environment

Many freelancers go through a lot of phases, working late nights, exciting projects, extreme dedication, lasting
friendships, long hours, punishing critiques, predictable events, a sense of community, and personal sacrifice come to
mind.

● living views: Indoor and outdoor spaces with views such as gardens, animals, fountains, mountains, people
and etc. allow minds and eyes to take a break, and meet several needs such as aesthetic, or self-esteem.
● visual stimulation: Walls (internal and external and their finishes should in fact display color and vivid patterns.
It is not only for aesthetics, but also because it has power to develop self-esteem.
● Background detail: Spaces with colorful displays on walls and doors such as wall outlet, louvers and surface
raceways can also serve the same purpose.
● Green areas: Outside spaces that are close to the building where greeneries may be Quite areas: Private places
(inside spaces or outside spaces) where learners may go for self- refreshment, and relaxation in a quite setting,
can generate a sense of belongingness.

Freelancers should treat their studio as simply a place where you sit and do work. Instead, treat it as a place where one
will want to go and feel inspired. When it comes to productivity, its about getting the people to love their work, the studio
ethos and the space. If they do that they will have much higher productivity. Also, don't forget to work regular hours, not
overtime.

7
Physical work conditions
• Usually work indoors
• May share office space with other designers

Work performance
• Must be sure their work is exact.
• Make decisions that affect clients and coworkers on a weekly basis. They make most decisions with consulting a
supervisor.
• Set most daily tasks, goals, and priorities without consulting a supervisor first.
• Abode by strict deadlines on a daily basis. This makes the work environment fairly competitive.
• Often repeat the same physical activities, such as drawing or using a computer mouse.

Hours/ travel
• Generally, work a set schedule
• May work part time or full time. Most work full time.
• May work overtime to meet deadlines

Questionnaire brief
The purpose of this questionnaire is to understand how freelancers deal with the time management and deadlines,
whether the deadlines overpower the work they do or it actually benefit them in a way or the other. Whether stress
results in unpleasant or pleasant consequences, and if unpleasant consequences take place, how to make it pleasant
for the users. How intrinsic and extrinsic motivation takes place and also what are the different moods of the users
during the working hours of the freelancers, and what are the techniques or methods they use currently to tackle all
the problems they face. To find whether the clocks they have currently is benefitting them in a way or the other and
how?

Crux of the questionnaire

Most of the people (42.9%) finds it difficult to cope up with the deadlines, whether it be design students, or freelance
designers working as a print designer, graphic designer or be it a writer, they all find difficulties in managing their time
and prioritizing the work that is required.
We found out that quite large number of people (78%) do not use the external sources like any app, smart clock or
any other means to tackle with the problem they face of time management issues and deadlines. But quite few people
who use the external sources like reminders find it quite helpful to them to constantly remind them of the projects they
need to deal with.
Users usually have 2-3 projects on an average and time one project takes is variable according to different people.

8
People actually liked the idea of external factor that keeps on reminding them of the projects in small intervals and
majority of the people said it would de-stress them from the ultimate deadline. Also, people like to make the lists of the
projects they are working on.

Quotes from targeted audience

“I like the project to be structured with all systems laid out with just the right degree of flexibility. Arbitrary phone calls
and demands from the person leading the project often make me irritated”.

“you don’t have to wake up to an alarm clock. You don’t have to rush to get ready for work in the mornings. You don’t
have to schedule your time around a conventional schedule. Bosses aren’t looking over your shoulder constantly”.

“I take breaks whenever I’m hungry or need coffee. And when I’m satisfied with the amount of work I’ve done and that
my deadlines are going to be safely met, I chill or work on my own projects”.

“Once done for the day, I draw up a schedule of everything I need to get done the next day”.

“Successful freelancers who leave the job economy to work for themselves have mastered the art of the schedule.
Because they understand that the most important part of their day is the impact it has your on your week”.

“A time frame plus multiple changes to a project makes it a bit stressful”.

A day in a life of a freelancer

We studied various freelancer’s schedules and spoke to quite few of them. People usually think freelancers don’t usually
spend hours every day working on projects, but they really have to wear a lot of hats every day. Managing clients, send
proposals, develop relationship with clients, develop relationship with freelancer communities and a lot more. When you
try to do too much of one thing in a regular day you end up getting burned out, you over schedule your week, and end
up putting out low quality products. Why? Simple. Freelancer success is about balance. They need to know their
chronotype, its very important to structure a day to allow you to work in tandem with your body. Analyzing different
situations like at what time their energy is highest, the time when you are least likely to be interrupted and so on. And
accordingly, work on your most important project before you start working on less important projects. Determining what
your most important project is? It might be the one with the nearest deadline or it might be the one for your most valuable
client. The best way to maximize the workflow and avoid having to “stay late” at your office, is to create and stick to a
routine. You need to know and schedule that lets you know what you’re doing next. Setting a routine also helps you
learn how much work you can complete in a day Many freelancers love the immediacy of working from home, that
makes it so effective. Work from home gives a lot of freedom to create a schedule that works for them. And at the same
time, it’s important to make the schedule adjustments and then get to work.

STANDARD DIMENSIONS:

DIAMETER OF UNFRAMED Wall Clocks:

12-inch clocks are 12 inches diameter, 18 are 18 inches diameter, 24 clocks are 24 inches diameter

DIAMETER of FRAMED: (the measurement includes the face AND the frame)
12-inch clocks: 9-inch face; overall face plus frame is 12 inches
18-inch clocks: 15-inch face; overall face plus frame is 18 inches
23-inch clocks: 18-inch face; overall face plus frame is 23 inches
29-inch clocks: 21-inch face; overall face plus frame is 29 inches
35-inch clocks: 28-inch face; overall face plus frame is 35 inches
46.5-inch clocks: 37-inch face; overall face plus frame is 46.5 inches
60-inch clocks: 50-inch face; overall face plus painted edge is 60 inches
HOW MUCH DO THEY WEIGH?
Open-faced wall clocks (no frame) 12 inch = 3 lbs., 18 inches =6 lbs., 23 inch = 10 lbs., 29 inches =17, 35 inch = 21
lbs., 46.5 inch = 35 lbs., 60 inch = 75 lbs.
Framed: 12 inches = 4 lbs., 18 inch = 7 lbs., 24 inch = 12 lbs., 30 inches = 16, 36 inch = 20 lbs., 48 inch = 40 lbs.,

The average hand size gives you a clock face of about 6 to 18 inches, and the high torque hands will allow for a clock
face of about 24 to 36 inches.

Make sure to get a battery that is over 1.3v for the large wall clocks. The larger hands take a lot of energy so a better
battery will last longer. Lithium batteries are said to last a long time in clocks.

MARKET TRENDS:

BRIGHT

Bright colors and pastel tones bring a touch of playfulness to simple

styles. Novelties include ceramic products and all-over applications,
where the color is no longer restricted to the face of the clock.

COLOUR POP

Energetic tones of lime, orange and turquoise are applied to a limited

area of designs such as hands and borders, creating an eye-catching
and unexpected element to contrast against grey and white clocks.
This is a playful update and an alternative to entirely colored
offerings.

BLACK

As darker design continues to influence interior products, retailers offer

an array of black clocks in both glossy and matte variations. Metallic
accents make for a sophisticated addition while bright tones and wood
offset the dark element.

CUCKOO

Designers come up with playful ways to update the classic cuckoo clock,
placing decorative birds on and around the designs for a fresh take.
Traditional options are still available, simplified and made contemporary
with a monochrome palette.

XL

Oversized designs demonstrate how clocks are shifting from being mere
functional objects to decorative accents in their own right. Offerings
include both contemporary and traditional styles for the wall and floor.

18
WARM METALS

Warm metals become increasingly commercial and accessible, updating

classic clock designs with all-over gleaming finishes or subtle yet opulent
details.

WOOD

Natural finishes and simple shapes define wooden clocks, for an artisanal
yet refined, timeless option. Metallic details update the traditional look,
creating interesting tactile contrasts.

STEEL

Modern, clean lines meet slim frames and silver metallic finishes for a refined,
pared-back look.

21
DESIGN PARAMETERS
After analyzing the background research and surveys that we conducted, and the reason of intervention makes it clear
enough that the clock needs to have a unique feature to revive its purpose, so, the uniqueness can be corporated as
per the need of client that is “need of an effective reminder”. To design the clock, the following parameters need to be
kept in mind:

1. Who is your target consumer?

2. What are the upcoming trends?
3. Effective design of the Clock.
4. The use of a sustainable material.
5. The color psychology as colors play a major role.
6. While designing the User Interface and User Experience, keep in mind the user habits and behaviors while
dealing with projects and deadlines.
7. Studying the environment as to not create only the product but to enhance the overall experience for the user.
8. How user interacts with the smart phones and create a user-friendly operating system.
9. Deadline should be as means of motivation and not the source of stress.
10. Reminding the user of their projects, priorities and deadlines.

DESIGN BRIEF

To design a range of wall clocks for the freelancers and the people who find it difficult to deal with the deadlines and
stress associated with it. The design blends the elements of analog and technical approach making the user more
productive through its user-friendly features and avoiding distractions.

22
DESIGN SCENERIOS

Scenario one – when the clock is for the individual, creating the list of the projects and prioritizing it will be very easy
because that would be personalized. All the person needs to do is to input the projects in the app and just leave it to
the clock and the mobile app to remind them of the projects they are dealing with.

Scenario two – projects appearing on the mobile screen as well as the clock. Sometimes, when working, an individual
tends to ignore the mobile phones and reminders that is kept somewhere, not known. But when the clock is reminding
him of the projects through various senses like ticking sound, colors, etc. it would be more impactful than a mobile
phone reminder.

Scenario three – In case of a design studio with a team of 3-5 members, the clock can be designed in a way that it
gets linked to the devices of all the members. If the number of people is more it would be difficult to differentiate
between the senses for different projects, so there would be a limit like 3-5 members maximum and then the clock
would just get connected like a hotspot connects to various devices at a time.
The members could just input their projects info through the app and choose their individual color schemes and
sounds for their reminders. In case, the time limit for 2 or 3 projects turn out to be same, the clock would itself adjust
the color and the sound according to the first project with same deadline.

23
CONCEPT
“DEADLINES”
Graphic designers usually are part of a larger team that includes writers and production specialists. Each cog of the
wheel must meet strict deadlines for the projects to flow smoothly. This means your graphic designer must have a keen
sense of deadlines, work well under pressure and be highly organized. Their evaluation should reflect how well they
meet their deadlines and whether they are flexible enough to adjust deadlines as necessary without hindering the work
schedule.

Other than 60 LEDs around the edge of the clock for displaying the deadlines, there will be another LED strip on the
outer edge that would indicate the approaching deadline in blended colors as per color psychology.
It is a modern but otherwise ordinary analog wall clock range, with mechanical hour minute and second hands and
LED dots shining through its crystal face to indicate the deadlines. The LEDs have multi-colors incorporated. So that
the user may set the colors as per his choice for a particular project.
The clock also has a speaker that can be used for audible alerts. Things get sort of magical when you establish a
Bluetooth connection between the clock and your smartphone.
There is an option of the converting the wall clock to table clock through a stand which is easy to attach and detach.

43
MATERIAL:
Aluminium is a light weight, high strength material and because of these unique properties it is used in virtually every
facet of the modern construction industry. It is easy to handle which reduces the environmental impact and cost or
transportation. It is incredibly formable and can be bent or shaped into innumerable designs. Aluminium is very
durable and highly resistant to rust / corrosion caused by modern industrial pollutants and requires very little, long
term maintenance. The life span of aluminium products is measured in decades rather than years.

The current trend in environmental policies focuses in the main on sustainability and the recyclable credentials of
building materials. Aluminium is arguably the most sustainable building material in the world and is also highly
recyclable. Aluminum is one of the most widely recycled materials and through the recycling process it saves 95%
of the energy that it would cost to produce new aluminum.

FINISHING:
Powder coating is a technique mainly used to apply decorative and protective finishes to aluminium profiles through a
process that electrostatically charges the powder consisting of a mixture of finely milled resin and pigment, spraying it
on to the aluminium extrusion, and then fusing it into a smooth coating in a curing oven.

44
Powder coating is a highly versatile aluminium surface treatment option and offers several advantages in any
application. For instance, powder coating is available in a huge range of colours from simple matt, satin and gloss
finishes to super matt, super gloss, and textured finishes. Consistency in finish is assured with powder-coated
aluminium installed at the start of a project looking the same as other powder-coated surfaces installed towards the
end of the project.

45
DESIGNS WITH MATERIAL FINISH

Powder coating over aluminum surface has flexibility in terms of textural finishes as well as finishing in various colors.
We have chosen neutral colors for the clock body as there are colorful LEDs for indicating deadlines. These are few
designs with pattern for LEDs and appearance of the main body of the clock.
