Starting from 7 Januari 2020, it has been about 14 weeks of interaction in this
SCES3052 Arts in Education course with my lecturer, Madam Yee Sye Foong.
Through this course, I managed to gain new knowledges and skills for teaching and
learning of primary school science subject through the applications of arts in
education. Like visual, music and movement component that can be implemented in
teaching activities to create a more enjoyable and effective lessons which is suitable
for all the pupils.
My assumption before taking this course is that all the pupils in a class is just
the same can be taught with the “one size fit all” strategy that is practised in most
school at our country. This is because some teachers think that all their pupils is just
the same and can be taught with just a single way like lecture and doing execises in
the exercise book which is really dull and boring for the pupils. But, based on the
Howard Gardner Multiple Intelligence Theory that I learned from this course, I
realized that every pupils is unique and have difference between each other. It is the
teachers’ responsibility to know their pupils better, so that they can organize their
lessons with strategies and activities that suites the pupils capabilities and tendency.
Because of that, I will impliment the knowledge and experience on how to handle the
difference in the pupils by having multiple strategies in teaching. For example, just by
having lecture in class, some pupils can get the idea easily because they might be
more into the logical mathematical intelligence, but others might be having difficulty
because they are more into other intelligences. That is why having more varieties in
the class activities such as implementing music and dances in the lesson can help
the other pupils to understand the concept better in different way. Because of that, I
had gain the consciousness about the importance of knowing our pupils well so that
their potential can be throughly enhanced.
Not only that, before enrolling in this course I also always thought that what is
the only important things for the student is to be great in exam and get good results.
But actually it is also important to implement some good morale in the pupils as for
them to become a much better person, not just being good in academic only. This is
because having good attitude and manner is really important especially in our daily
life that involves interaction between peoples and natures. As a pupil, the fact that
little things in life such as being respectful to teachers and always being punctual can
affect the class greatly by enhancing the teacher’s spirit and effort for teaching his
pupils. On top of that, the pupils can enjoy the class and understand the lessons
better without having a stressful enviroment that can happen like when the teacher
were angry and disappointed because of his pupils that came late to class without
any good excuses which may lead to the teacher lost his enthusiasm for teaching.
Moreover, we also need to implemented the importance of saving our nature in our
lesson especially us who will be teaching science that is closely related to Mother
Nature. Having the pupils to realize that they need to protect the nature is really
important, so that they also can contribute to saving the nature. For example, in class
we always emphasizes the value of using recycled materials in for the teaching kits
so that we can reduce the amount of waste products that has polluted the
environment. Because of that, I realized that having good manners and awareness
towards nature are important to be implemented in the pupils.
