3. THE FUNCTIONS OF SAMURAI WARRIORS IN ANCIENT JAPAN
During the Heian period (seven hundred and ninety-one hundred and eighty-five) the samurai
were hired to protect the powerful lieutenants or feudal lords (known as daimyo) who had
become independent of the central state. Some samurai, however, work independently
without serving any daimyo. They were known as ronin.
The relationship between the two was very simple: the feudal lords granted land and wealth
to the samurai in exchange for their military services. Thus the caste of warriors was gaining
increasing relevance and power. Their bond was close and the samurai served them loyally
until the end of their days.
During the end of the ninth and early tenth century, various revolts were served in Japan due
to periods of famine and plagues, which collapsed the country's order and economy. The
government was forced to request the help of the feudal lords to provide military troops
facing the rebellions. In this way his military character was increasing.
