Lesson 7 - Problem Solving Strategies PDF

This document discusses Polya's four-step problem solving strategy: 1) understand the problem, 2) devise a plan, 3) carry out the plan, and 4) review the solution. It also lists common problem solving techniques like guessing and checking, solving similar simpler problems, making lists or tables, and working backwards. The goal is for students to apply Polya's strategy and different problem solving techniques to successfully solve problems. Supplementary references and materials on problem solving strategies are also provided.

Problem Solving Strategies

Module 6 Problem Solving Strategies

At the end of this module, you are expected t0:

1. Apply Polya’s strategy in solving problems.
2. Use different techniques in problem solving.

Polya’s Problem Solving Strategy

1. Understand the problem
2. Devise a plan
3. Carry out the plan
4. Review the solution

1. Understand the problem

To be able to solve a problem, understanding what the problem asks for is very important.
2. Devise a plan
Successful problems solvers uses a variety of techniques when they attempt to solve a
problem. The following techniques are most useful:

Techniques
1. Guess and check.
2. Solve a similar but simpler problem.
3. Make an organized list.
4. Make a table and look for a pattern.
5. Work backwards.
6. Draw a diagram.
3. Carry out the plan
Once a plan has been devised it must be carried out.

4. Review the solution.

It is very important that once an answer was arrived it must be verified with regards to the given
problem. Solutions must ensure that answers are consistent.
