ULO-f Let’s Analyze
Activity 1. Getting acquainted with the essential terms in the study of human
population and urbanization is not enough; what also matters is you should also be
able to explain its interrelationships. Now, I will require you to explain your answers
thoroughly.

1. Identify a major local, national, and global environmental problem, and

describe the role that population growth plays in this problem.
Air pollution is the major environmental problem at local level. The various
causes of air pollution are combustion of fossil fuels and release of toxic gases
by factories. On the other hand, water pollution is the major environmental
problem at national level. The primary cause of this is the discharge of industrial
waste directly into the water without any treatment. The industrial waste
contains various harmful pollutant that results in water pollution. Population
growth plays a major role in air pollution because of the increased usage of
vehicles. Also, the civilization of humanities, fueled by population growth,
results in industrialization and technological development. In which, many trees
are cut and natural resources were used to establish the latter, contributing to
the pollution.

2. Explain the different factors that contribute to environmental impact affecting

human activities.

Human ecology is the study of interactions between human and nature in

different cultures. The environment is different into man-made and natural
environments. Manmade environment includes the social, cultural and religious
components of human activities where as natural environment may be further
divide into living thing and non-living thing components.

The following are some of the several factors that contribute to environmental
impact affecting human activities:
1. Over population. Population increased as day passes since mortality
decreased, medicine improved and methods of industrial farming were
introduced, thus keeping human alive for much longer. Increasing population
causes damage to the ecosystem. Without enough trees due to industrialization
and there’s an increasing level of carbon dioxide will cause potential damage
to every organism.
2. Pollution. Pollution is everywhere. Several contaminants introduced into
natural environment and results in adverse changes. This may be in the form
of noise, light or heat. Humans continuously polluting resources like air, water
and soil which affecting the environment.
3. Global Warming. This is the most important cause that impacting the
environment. The levels of carbon dioxide emission are increasing because of
inadequate or not enough number of trees due to deforestation and burning of
fossil fuels.
4. Climatic Change. A warming climate can cause sea water to expand and
ice over land to melt. Both of which raise sea levels. There two different
mechanisms contribute to raise in sea levels. First, as the ocean warms due to
an increasing global temperature, sea water expands taking up the more space
in basin and second mechanism is melting of ice over the land, which then add
water to ocean.
5. Ozone Depletion. Ozone layer absorbs harmful UV rays and provides
healthy life but chemicals like chlorine and bromide responsible for ozone layer
depletion and impacting the plants like wheat and barley.

3. Make a list of things that you can do to help control the population explosion.

As a student, the following lists are some of the things that are within the reach
to help control the population explosion.
1. Spread Awareness. People need to be told and made to understand the
consequence of having children. Spreading awareness to teenagers and adults
can be done easily through the word of mouth, and writings. Also, the
government can impose awareness by campaigns informing the pros and cons
of having many children. Being educated about family planning is something
we can learn through reading and listening to some advices from someone
close to us and apply it into ourselves, so that we can contribute to minimize
the population explosion we face today.
2. Women Empowerment. Nowadays, gender discrimination is a major reason
for population growth. People keep giving birth to bear more sons than
daughters. Through empowerment, women with a say in matters concerning
child birth and giving them knowledge how to fight against discrimination will
ensure a healthy and aware society.
3. Education. This serves as the backbone of an individual and economy.
Being educated people know and aware the harms which an increasing
population possesses. This can work wonders in minimizing the population.
Through this, both men and women could understand the benefits of having a
small family and the costs of having many.
4. Availability of Contraceptives. Contraceptives are the most common to tool
that will help in avoiding unwanted pregnancies. This can be bought anywhere
even in small clinics, medical boutique and such. This tool does not only prove
to be useful as a population control measure but as well as prevents spreading
of sexually transmitted diseases.

4. Discuss the factor that may affect population growth.

One factor that for me has a big impact and influence population growth is the
culture or social norms. As we live in the 21st century, some things that are not
normal became acceptable as time passes by. As we are becoming more
civilized, the society seems to be always conforming to what the majority
believe to be acceptable. Before women dressed without revealing their legs
and feet but now anyone can wear above knee pants and so forth. With this,
people were exposed and becoming open minded to perceive things differently
from before. Their thinking leads differently from what it supposes to portray.
For example, decades ago premarital sex was believed to be deviant but now
it became acceptable which triggered the government to impose sex education
as early as secondary level, where as it resulted, however, to countless of
unwanted pregnancies. Because of this, we should know that the acceptance
of premarital sex to the norms of the society does not fuel or proves that
unwanted pregnancies is fine as well. This will only add up to poverty and in the
long run result to population growth.

5. Do you think the global population of 7.1 billion is too large? Explain. If your answer
was yes, what do you think should be done to slow human population growth? If your
answer was no, do you believe that there is a population size that would be too big?
Explain. Do you think that the population of the country where you live is too large?
Explain.

Yes. 7.1 billion is too large, for if it is not then we wouldn’t have to experience scarcity
of resources, increasing number of poverty and pollution and so forth. Slowing down
human population growth can effectively be achieve through the intervention of the
government. Government can impose policies concerning family planning such as the
maximum amount per family. They can also advertise and give awareness to
individuals about the advantages and disadvantages of having too much children in
the family. Honestly speaking, government has the most say about how to slow down
population growth, for it somewhat controls the public. Thus, relative to their role, it is
very important that one’s power should not be abuse and puts into use.

The population of the Philippines is large enough for a third world country. Considering
that the ratio of our national problems is just as the same to the increasing rate of
human population, is evident enough to consider that our population is too big for our
country. We must assess what are the country’s capacities to support the nation’s
needs. Our country may never enjoy its demographic dividend if poverty (16.6%),
unemployment (2.41%), and inflation aren’t addressed. That is why, before we expand
by numbers, we must first increase the country’s capacity to hold the probable
expansion.
