Module in RP Week1

This document discusses the Spearman's rho statistical technique. It provides learning competencies about identifying statistical treatments for research, analyzing the Spearman's rho process, determining Spearman's rho rules, and using statistics to acquire research findings. The formula for Spearman's rho is provided to measure the relationship between ranking variables. An example is given calculating the Spearman's rho between students' English and math scores, showing a high positive correlation between the subjects.

SPEARMAN - RHO
(GRADE 12)
WEEK 1
MARCH 9-13, 2020

MODULE

Module in Research Project/ Inquiry, Immersion and Investigation - Week 1 Page 1

SPEARMAN - RHO
Learning Competencies:
1. The learner identifies the various statistical treatment to be used in a research;
2. The learner analyzes the process of spearman-rho depending upon the type of
research to be used;
3. The learner determines the specific rules for spearman-rho ;
4. The learner uses the statistical techniques in order to acquire research findings

Discussion:
Spearman – rho

 It is used to indicate the magnitude and direction of the relationship of

some variables. It values ranking of each data.

Formula:

Spearman Rho

Sr = 1 - 6∑d2

n3 - n

where:

1= constant value (the poulation value that signfies 100%

6= constant value (the value of significance – 0.60/60%)
∑d2= sum of the squared difference of the scores of x and y based on the ranking
n= number of cases

The table shows the score of the Grade 12 STEM students who have taken an
assesment in English and Mathematics. By completing the table and using the
formula, identify the type of correlation between the score of the students in
English and Mathematics.
X - Scores in English
Y - Scores in Mathematics
N= 10
x y Ranking of Ranking of d d2
x y
20 19 6.5 3.5 3 9
21 22 8 8 0 0
22 23 9 9 0 0
19 21 5 7 -2 4
17 19 3 3.5 -0.5 0.25
16 17 1.5 1 0.5 0.25
16 20 1.5 5.5 -4 16
23 24 10 10 0 0
20 18 6.5 2 4.5 20.25
18 20 4 5.5 -1.5 2.25
∑x=192 ∑y=203 ∑x2=3,740 ∑d=0 ∑d2=52

Note: (Steps to complete the table)

1. Get the summation of X and Y

2. For the columns of ranking of X and Y, rank the scores from lowest to highest, (if
there are 2 or three same scores, identify the rank of the scores then get the avarage.
For example:

X Ranking of X
12 3
12 3
12 3
15 4

12 + 12 + 12 = 36/3 = 3 (Therefore, the rank of the similar scores (12) is 3. then the
next score will be rank 4.)
3. In “d column” get the difference of the values from the ranking of X and Y. Then get
the summation. The summation in this column must always zero.
4. In column “d²”, multiply the value in d column by itself. Then get the summation.
5. After completing the table, solve for the value of spearman-rho using the formula.

sr = 1 - 6∑d2

n3 - n

sr = 1 - 6(52)

103 - 10

sr = 1 - 312

1000-10

sr = 1 - 312

990

sr = 1 - 0.315

sr =0.685 - High Positive Correlation

That means that there is a high positive correlation between the scores of
the students in their assessment in English and Mathematics. Therefore, we can
conclude that if a student gets a high score in English, the student can also do
the same in Mathematics. The student excels both in English and Mathematics.
