Helicopter history
● On September 14, 1939, the VS-300, the world's first helicopter, took flight at
Stratford, Connecticut
● Designed by Igor Sikorsky and built by the Vought-Sikorsky Aircraft Division of
the United Aircraft Corporation
● the helicopter was the first to incorporate a single main rotor and tail rotor
design
● The history of vertical flight began at least as early as about 400 CE
● there are historical references to a Chinese kite that used a rotary wing as a
source of lift
● During the latter part of the 15th century, Leonardo da Vinci made drawings of
a helicopter that used a spiral airscrew to obtain lift.
● A toy helicopter, using rotors made out of the feathers of birds, was presented to
the French Academy of Science in 1784 by two artisans, Launoy and Bienvenu
Who were the people that made significant contributions to the
original invention and the development of the technology?

● The Russian-American aviation pioneer Igor Sikorsky is

considered to be the "father" of helicopters
● It wasn’t because he was the first to invent the helicopter, but
because he invented the first successful helicopter and there
were more designs that were based on the one he made
What are the advantages
● Helicopters have advantages over some other forms of flight for example, it is
able to fly backwards and side to side
● It can also land without a runway for a fixed wing aircraft
● a helicopter can pick someone with a medical problem up where there is no
runway. It can then land in a small area on top of a hospital
● It can turn in the air in ways airplanes cannot
● It can hover in one spot in the air without moving
What are the disadvantages?

● the chance of crashing is greatest around the hours of when it's dark and in bad
weather
● Noise and vibration might cause nausea, pain and motor disfunction
● Helicopters hold very few passengers and little luggage. Plus, helicopters are
highly dependent on weather
● High winds and rain can ground a helicopter, which means you’ll have to wait
until the weather clears before you can fly
● Helicopters also require roughly three times as much maintenance as a jet or
turboprop, and these mechanical problems tend to occur more frequently
How has the invention changed since it was first
introduced?
● It was first made of reen linen and wires
● But now helicopters are made out of different types of metal, motors and it has
two different rotating rotor blades
● For military purposes they have adapted to putting military weapons on the
helicopters
● There are now a vast number of helicopter types available on the market,
ranging from small two-person private helicopters through large passenger
● capable of carrying huge loads to remote places
● There are other types of vertical-lift aircraft, whose controls and techniques are
often a blend of the conventional aircraft and the helicopter
How, shown through a timeline, has the invention changed from
its original form to its present form?
How, using photos and drawings, has the invention evolved?
Through your own prediction, how do you think the invention may change in the
future?
● In the future they might have the helicopters carry more people and have the
material that it’s made out of stronger than what its already made out of
● The helicopter may be faster in the future and it might not matter on the
weather if its safe to fly
