Physics 71 Formative Quiz 1 (Prepared by Mark Ivan Ugalino)

Lectures 1-6

Instructions: Follow the instructions for each item. Try to solve by yourself before asking for assistance.

1. Dimensional bookstore. (10 points)

A. (2 points) Determine the fundamental dimensions [e.g. L (length), T (time) etc] of the universal
gravitation constant 𝐺. This constant relates the gravitational force 𝐹𝑔 experienced by the two masses
𝑚1 and 𝑚2 , to the product of these masses divided by the square of the distance 𝑑 between them, in
the following manner:

𝑚1 𝑚2
𝐹𝑔 = 𝐺
𝑑2

B. (3 points) Explain why dimensional quantities like Planck’s constant cannot be arguments of some
functions like the exponential function 𝑒 ℎ . Planck’s constant has units
[𝑘𝑔][𝑚]2
ℎ:
[𝑠]
Hint:
The exponential function 𝑒 𝑥 can be represented using an infinite sum,

𝑥
𝑥𝑘 𝑥2 𝑥3
𝑒 =∑ = 1+𝑥+ + +⋯
𝑘! 2 6
𝑘=0
Investigate 𝑒 ℎ .

[𝑘𝑔]
C. (5 points) The ideal gas law states that a gas’s pressure 𝑃 ([𝑚]2 [𝑠]2 ) depends upon its volume
𝑉 ([𝑚]3 ), amount of substance 𝑛 ([𝑚𝑜𝑙]), temperature 𝑇 ([𝐾]) and the ideal gas constant 𝑅. If the
fundamental dimensions of 𝑅 is given by,

𝑅: [𝑘𝑔][𝑚]2 [𝐾]−1 [𝑚𝑜𝑙]−1 [𝑠]−2

obtain the ideal gas law by performing dimensional analysis. Properly define variables used.
2. Ikaw puro ka TikTok! (10 points)
Hardy, an avid TikToker, decided to look at his faulty wristwatch to tell his friend dolphins the current time.
However, his dolphins only understand the time if it is stated in terms of the resultant vector when the
hour hand and minute hand vectors are added together. Assume that both vectors point from the center,
outward. The length of the hour hand is 3.00 [cm]; while the length of the minute hand is 1.50 [cm].

Follow this format in answering each sub-item:

a. Draw the position of the hour and minute hands on an analog clock for this time
configuration. Label your illustration with relevant angles and magnitudes (2 points)
b. Decompose the components of each vector along the 𝑥 and 𝑦 direction. (2 points)
c. Calculate for the resultant vector and express in the form required in each item. (1 point)

What should Hardy tell his dolphins if the current time is

A. (5 points) 5:30 AM, in bearing form? (5 points)

B. (5 points) 1:25 PM, in unit vector form? (5 points)

3. Urong-sulong ka… (10 points)
Rocky, the right-hand man of Al Buquerque, is driving a car together with his boss. Because of his car’s
faulty engine, the car moves irregularly, prompting Al to record their motion. Shown below is the 𝑥 − 𝑡
plot obtained by Al over a time interval of 30 minutes. Al measured the distance in meters [m].

A. Draw the corresponding 𝑣 − 𝑡 and 𝑎 − 𝑡 plots on the grid provided below. (3 points each)
B. Using the 𝑥(𝑡) plot provided, compute for the following quantities (4 points)
a. Average velocity of their car over the whole duration in kilometers per hour [km/hr] (2 points)

b. Instantaneous velocity of their car at time 𝑡 = 3 seconds in meters per second [m/s] (2 points)

4. Hinulugang Taktak (10 points)

To promote his new single “Itaktak Mo”, Joe decided to launch a satellite into orbit that will intercept all
airwaves and play his song worldwide. To do this, he needs to mount his 100 [kg] satellite onto a 750 [kg]
rocket. It blasts off vertically from a launch pad with a constant net upward acceleration of 3.80 [m/s2].
When it has reached a height of 680 [m], the satellite was released, and the rocket blew up shortly after,
due to a system failure. Assume that the satellite was not damaged after the explosion.

A. What is the maximum height that the satellite will reach above the launch pad? (2 points)

B. How much time will elapse after system failure before the satellite comes crashing down the launch
pad? (3 points)

C. How fast will the satellite be moving just before it crashes? (5 points)
