VPLEX hardware overview

Lists the VPLEX hardware generations and implementations.
There are three generations of VPLEX hardware:
l VS6
l VS2
l VS1
There are three implementations of VPLEX available:
l VPLEX Local - single cluster
l VPLEX Metro - two clusters, separated by synchronous distances
l VPLEX Geo - two clusters, separated by asynchronous distances

Note

l VPLEX VS1 hardware is only supported to Release 5.4.1.x.

l VPLEX Geo is only supported to GeoSynchrony 5.5.

IP addresses and component IDs

IP addresses and component IDs for VS6, VS2, and VS1.
The IP addresses of the VPLEX hardware components are determined by a set of
formulae that depend on the internal management network (A or B), the Cluster IP
Seed, and (for directors) the Enclosure ID (which matches the engine number).
The Cluster IP Seed is the same as the Cluster ID, which depends on the VPLEX
implementation:
l VPLEX Local - The Cluster ID is always 1.
l VPLEX Metro - The Cluster ID for the first cluster that is set up is 1, and the
second cluster is 2.

General cabling guidelines

General cabling guidelines that apply to all generations of VPLEX hardware.
Follow these guidelines when installing cabling on VPLEX hardware:
l For serviceability, keep cables neatly dressed and routed out of the way of FRUs.
l Cabling should start with engine 1, then with engine 2 through 4, sequentially
layering the looped wires against the side of the rack.
l Dress cables straight up or down from the FRU connections to the nearest cable
management tray to keep them out of the way of other FRU components.
l Route cables directly to the cable management tray and ensure that they do not
block another unit in their path. Improperly routing cables over replaceable units
increases the time to replace those blocked units, increasing the chance of data
unavailability.

2 VPLEX Reference
VPLEX Hardware Reference

l Route extra cable length to the sides of the cabinet, looping it up and then back
down again to the target cable management tray. Secure cables to the side of the
cabinet with cable ties or Velcro strips. Maintain a minimum 2-inch bend radius.

VS6 Hardware
Information about VS6 hardware
Unlike previous generations of VPLEX hardware, in which the components were side-
by-side in the engine, the components in a VS6 engine have a top and bottom
orientation. As such, the components on Side B are reversed and inverted with
respect to the components on Side A.
The lower 25U of the factory-racked cabinet and the lower pair of power distribution
units (PDUs) are reserved for VPLEX components ONLY.

removed and a temporary Fibre Channel I/O module is inserted to transfer I/O. After
the upgrade is complete, the temporary I/O modules are removed and replaced with
the filler modules.
