A Time-Out Has Occurred While Initializing Data Transfer With MediaAgent

A time-out occurred while initializing data transfer between a MediaAgent and client. To resolve, ensure the Commserve, mediaagent, and client are at the latest service pack level and check network connectivity. Also verify storage device and library settings and try optimizing the MediaAgent for concurrent backups if it handles backups from many clients. Recycling services and checking data interface pairs may also help resolve the issue.

A time-out has occurred while initializing data transfer with MediaAgent

- Assure Commserve, mediaagent and client are at latest Service Pack level

- If this is a LAN Data Transfer, check network connectivity between the Client and
MediaAgent
These commands are helpful from Client to MediaAgent and MediaAgent to Client:

Example: "....galaxy|simpana/Base/cvping [server] 8400" - do this for ports 8400-

8402

From CommCell Browser highlight name of Client and click Properties->All Tasks-
>Check Readiness
and assure there is not issue.
Do same for MediaAgent

- For Network Free Data Transfer verify that there are no issues with the secondary
storage device on the MediaAgent.

- From CommCell Browser highlight name of Client and expand down to

defaultBackupSet
In the right side sub-client window highlight the suspect
sub-client->Properties->Storage Device->Data Transfer and ensure all settings are
correct.

And if the MediaAgent is used for concurrent data protection operations from a large
number of clients.
For example, having 25 clients concurrently using the MediaAgent for 50 or more data
transfer streams
you can try enabling "Optimize for concurrent LAN backups' on the MediaAgent i.e.
From CommCell Browser go to Storage Resources->MediaAgents->[name of
MediAgent]->Control"
check the box for "Optimize for concurrent LAN Backups"
If this box is already check and you are having this issue, then try unchecking it.

- IF this is a UNIX MediaAgent, then you can try enabling native drivers.
From CommCell Browser go to Storage Resources->MediaAgents->[name of
MediaAgent]->Control"
check the box for "Use native device driver for tape media"

If you see devices timing out (in MediaManager.log file) and jobs failing as a result,
you may want to adjust the timeout value for SCSI commands to these devices.
See Books Online "Adjust Timeout Value for SCSI Commands on UNIX
MediaAgents"

- For Network Free Data Transfer verify that there are no issues with the secondary
storage device on the MediaAgent
From CommCell Browser run report from Tools->Reports-Library and Drive and check
for errors.

- Check to assure there are plenty of spares in the library

- Try recycling Galaxy services on client then MediaAgent if necessary

- If client or mediagent has multiple NICS please set up a DataInterface pair

between the client and the MediaAgent using the IP addresses of the NICS for the
backups i.e.:
From CommCell Browser got to "Tools->Control Panel->DataInterface Pairs"

- Make sure the client NIC for backups is at top of binding order

- Please assue the IP addresses for client and mediaagent resolve one another
respectively

- Check to see if there is an old interface that needs to be disabled

- Check to assure all cables are secure on MediaAgent

- Check the error log on the library if it has one

Please call the Hot Line and open a TR is you need further assistance 877-780-3077
and send logs for the Commserve, MediaAgent and Client
