Design of Deep Beam: Check Whether The Beam Is Deep Beam or Simple Beam

This document summarizes the design of a deep beam with dimensions of 8 inches wide and 78 inches deep. It has a total span of 4.5 feet and is classified as a deep beam since the ratio of depth to length is greater than 0.4. The beam self-weight and loadings are calculated, resulting in a total factored load of 1.9175 k/ft. The required flexural reinforcement area is calculated as 0.06464 in^2, satisfied by using five #5 bars spaced at 4 inches. The shear capacity is also checked and found to exceed the factored shear due to insufficient concrete contribution to shear capacity for a deep beam.

DESIGN OF DEEP BEAM

Dimensions & Parameters: Beam Type 2

1 = SIMP
Width of Beam (bw) 8 inches 2 = CONT
Depth of Beam (h) 78 inches

Total Span of Beam 4.500 ft

Clear Span of Beam 4.5000 ft

Check whether the beam is Deep Beam or Simple Beam

h/ln > 0.4 for continous span

Clause 10.7
h/ln > 0.8 for simply supported span ACI 318-99

h/ln = 1.44444444444 > 0.4 It is a DEEP BEAM

Loadings:

1) Self weight of beam = 0.65 k/ft

2) Dead Load :

a) Partition Load = 0 k/ft

b) Load from Slab = 0.325 k/ft

3) Live Load :

Load from Slab = 0.325 k/ft

Total load (w ) = 1.4D + 1.7L = 1.9175 k/ft

Mu = w.l2 /8 = 4.8537 k.ft

Since As = Mu
d = full depth of
Ф.y.fy beam

For y : ln/h = 0.6923 Err:520

For ln/h = 0.6 , y = 0.2d

For ln/h = 0.8 , y = 0.4d for ln/h = 0.6923
For ln/h = 1.0 , y = 0.6d y = Err:520
For ln/h = 2.0 , y = 0.8d y = 22.191 inches
For ln/h =3.0 , y=d

fy 60 ksi
f'c 3 ksi
Ф 0.9

As(actual = 0.0486050 in2/ft

For Min.Flexural Reinforcement :

Assume d = 0.9.h = 70.2 inches

For f'c <4500 psi:

Asmin = (200/fy).bw.d

Asmin = 1.872 in2

Criteria for choosing As(min) or As :

If As(actual) is less than Asmin then increase As(actual) by 33 % i.e

Multiply As(actual) by 1.33 and then compare As(actual) with As(min) and
then Select the minimum As from both As(min) and As(actual)

i.e As(Actual) x 1.33 = 0.06464 in2 < As(min)

Therefore As(actual) controls 0.06464

Choose 4 5 bars = 1.2265625 in2

2 bars on each face distributed within h/5 = 15.6 inches

of the tension zone of the beam

Spacing of bars = 15.6 inches 3.12 '' or 4 ''

5

i.e. 2 5 bars @ 4 '' c/c on each face

Design for Shear :

(1) Vu @ distance x = 0.15ln from the face of support :

0.15ln = 8.1 '' or 0.68 ft < d= 5.85 ft

Vu = w.l/2 - w.(0.15ln) = 3.0201 kips

Mu = w.l/2.(0.15ln) - w.(0.15ln).(0.15ln/2) = 2.47537 kft

Mu/ Vu.d = 0.14011

For Vc :
Check whether 3.5 - 2.5.(Mu/Vu.d) < 2.5 or > 2.5

i.e. (3.5 - 2.5.(Mu/Vu.d) = 3.150 > 2.5

Use 2.5

Recalculate Mu/Vu.d: 2.5 = 3.5 -2.5.(Mu/Vu.d)

i.e. Mu/Vu.d = 0.4

Vu/ Mu.d = `

ρw= As/bw.d = 0.000115

Since Vc = (3.5 - 2.5.(Mu/Vu.d)).(1.9 √f'c + 2500.ρw.Vu.d/Mu).bw.d

Vc = #VALUE! kips

& Vc = 6 √f'c.bw.d = 184.561 kips

Since 184.561 #VALUE! #VALUE!

Therefore Vc = #VALUE! kips

ФVc = #VALUE! kips
