III. Procedure

TEACHER`S ACTIVITIES STUDENTS ACTIVITIES

Preparation
a. Daily Routine
1. Let`s us all stand. ( The students will stand)

May I ask someone to lead the prayer? ( A student will lead the prayer)

2. Good morning class! Good morning Sir!

Please be sited. Thank you Sir.

3.Checking of Attendance
May I ask the class monitor who is/are the ( The class monitor will stand and say)
absent today? No one is absent Sir.
Very good.
4. Checking of Assignment.
Do we have an assignment? Yes Sir.

Let’s check your assignment. Kindly bring out

your notebook and exchange with your seatmate
How many items? Five items Sir.
Who wants to answer number 1?
Number 2?
Number 3?
Number 4?
Number 5? (Some students will show their answer on the
board.)
Who got the perfect score? (Students will raise their hands.)
Very good.

5. Review
For us to review what we’ve the last time, I will
post jumbled words on the board then I need
volunteers to arrange those jumbled words.
After they arrange the jumbled word kindly tell
the meaning of the word being formed.
Do you get it class? Yes Sir.
CONSTANT
STANTNOC Any symbol representing one fixed value.
VARIABLE
ARIABLE Any symbol representing possible values of a
quantity.
ENTPONTXE EXPONENT
Tells how many times the base is used as a
SABE factor.
BASE
WOERP The number that is being multiplied.
POWER
The product of equal factors.
Very good class.

6. Motivation
I will show some pictures then, kindly tell the
meaning of each picture.
Is that all clear class? Yes, Sir

Winking

Laughing

Sad
No smoking

Elderly Pedestrian

Do not litter.

Very good.
Give yourself a round of applause. (The students will clap their hands.)

b. Learning Activities
What have you been observe on the activity we
just did? There are symbols and its meaning.
Very good

So, do you have any idea what would be our Translating Algebraic Expression into Verbal
lesson for today? Phrase.

That’s great.

Our lesson for today is about Changing Algebraic

Expressions into verbal phrases and vice versa.

Let’s define first what Algebraic expression is, Any combination of one or more constant along
kindly read please. with at least one mathematical operation.
Thank you.

What are the four fundamental operations? The four fundamental operations are Addition,
Subtraction, Multiplication and Division.
Very good.

In translating algebraic expressions into verbal

phrases, it is important to know the words that
are used to indicate mathematical operation.
Here are some words that are being used,
SYMBOL: MEANING:
+ Addition, plus, increased, added to, the sum of,
more than
- Subtraction, minus, decreased by, subtracted
from, less than, diminished by
×, ., () Multiplication, times, multiplied by, product of
/, ÷ Division, divided by, ration of, the quotient of
= Equals, is equal to
< Is less than
> Is more than
≠ Is not equal to
≤ Is less than or equal to
≥ Is more than or equal to

Do you get it class? Yes, Sir.

Very good.

Examples:
1. x + 1 one added to a number x
Can you please make your own verbal phrase on
example number 1? a number x increased by one
Thank you.
2. t – 13 thirteen subtracted from a number t
a number t diminished by thirteen
Another translation?
Thank you.

3. -5m or -5(m) the product of negative 5 and a number m

Another translation? negative five times m
Thank you.
x/2
4. the quotient a number and 2
5. four is subtracted from the product of 5x – 4
five and number x
6. square of a number added to 7 g2 + 7

Do you get it class? Yes Sir.

Do you have any question? We don’t have any question Sir.
Very good.

Generalization
Therefore, Algebraic expression is? Any combination of one or more constant along

How do we translate Algebraic Expression into In translating algebraic expressions into verbal
Verbal Phrase and vice versa? phrases, it is important to know the words that
are used to indicate mathematical operation.

Very good.
Thank you.

Algebraic expression is any combination of one

or more constant along with at least one
mathematical operation.
In translating algebraic expressions into verbal
phrases, it is important to know the words that
are used to indicate mathematical operation.
What values do you think we can learn through The values we can learn from our lesson for
this lesson? today is we must be careful with signs. We must
convey their meaning properly for us to fully
transfer each meaning correctly.
Very good.
Thank you so much.

Mathematics always taught us that we should

always be careful with the signs just like I always
say. Symbols were everywhere, used to guide us
to do what is good for our community and for
our nation.

Is that all clear class? Yes Sir.

Very good.

Enrichment
Please go on your group.
DIRECTION: Translate the following verbal
phrases into Algebraic expression. Write letter
on the corresponding answer found in each
space at the bottom for you to answer the
question,
“Who was this English Mathematician that first
used modern symbol of equality in 1557 and
were equal sign (=) originated?”
R = twice the sum of a number and 3
E = half of a number
O = a number more than 7
R =the product of a number and 5
R =a number subtracted from 6
R = a number increased by 7
E = twice the square root of a number
T =six less than a number
O = twice a number divided by 4
D = twice the product of 3 and a number
B = the difference of m and n
C = the quotient of 7 and a number
E = y decreased by 12
______ ______ ______ ______ _______
X+ 7 7+y m-n ½e 2(f + 3)
______
d–6
______ ______ ______ ______ ______
5p y - 12 7 ÷ r 2x ÷ 4 6–a
______ ______
2 ( 3x ) 2 ( h2)

Once your group is through, kindly post your

work on the board.
(The students post their work on the board.)
Let’s check your work.
Congratulation to the winning group. (The students will clap their hands.)
Kindly give them a round of applause.

Robert Recorde was a Welsh physician and

mathematician. He invented the equals sign and
also introduced the pre-existing plus sign in
English speaker in 1557.
Evaluation
For your individual activity, kindly bring out your
quiz notebook then answer the following,
Direction: A. Translate the following into a verbal
phrase.
1. 2 ( x + 3 )
2. 3b – 5

B. Translate the following verbal phrases into

mathematical phrases. (The students will do their individual activity.)
3. the sum of five and thrice a number x
4. one less than the product of 3 and z Yes, Sir.
5. a number c increased by ½

Are you all through class?

Let’s check your work. Exchange notebook. Who

wants to answer number 1? (Some students will show their answer on the
Number 2? board.)
Number 3?
Number 4?
Number 5?

Who got 5? (The students will raise their hands.)

Who got 4?
Who got 3?
Who got 2?
Who got 1?

Very good class.

Assignment
