GEOT2000 Laboratory 1: Sieve Size (MM) Weight of Empty Sieve (G) Weight of Sieve With Retained Mass (G)

1. The total sample mass was 1050g. Sieving analysis showed that the total mass of coarse fraction was ___g and the total mass of fine fraction was ___g. 2. Hydrometer tests were conducted on the fraction smaller than 0.075mm (50g) at 27°C. Readings were taken at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 15 minutes. 3. The particle size distribution curve was plotted using the sieving and hydrometer data to determine the percentages of clay, silt, sand, gravel and other fractions in the sample.

GEOT2000 Laboratory 1

In the Sieving Analysis Test:

Total sample mass for sieving, Mt: 1050 g.

The sieving data obtained from the laboratory is the following Table 1. The weight of each empty
sieve is recorded. After sieving, the weight of each sieve with retained mass result is recorded.

Hydrometer test
After the sieving, 50g of sample less than 0.075mm retained on the pan were taken for the
hydrometer test.
Temperature recorded during the test: 27C. Specific gravity, Gs, of fine-grained particles = 2.65
The correction factor of hydrometer test:
a) Correction factor due to dispersing agent C = 2.5
b) Meniscus correction Cm = 0.5
