Units and Measurements

1 Distinguish between accuracy and precision?

Answer:

Accuracy Precision
1) It is the closeness of the measured value 1) It is the closeness of the measured
to the true value. values of repeated measurements.
2) It depends on the minimization of 2) It depends on the least count of the
errors in the measurement. measuring instrument.

2 What are the different types of errors that can occur in a measurement? How systematic
errors be minimised or eliminated?

Answer: The errors can be broadly classified as

a) Systematic Errors b) Random Errors c) Gross Errors.
Systematic errors can be minimised by improving experimental techniques, selecting better
instruments and removing personal bias as far as possible.
3 Distinguish between fundamental units and derived units?

Answer:

Fundamental Units Derived Units

1) Fundamental units are the units of 1) Derived units are the units of derived
the fundamental physical quantities in SI quantities which are derived from the
system. fundamental quantities.
2) There are a total of seven fundamental 2) Examples: meter per second (velocity),
units such as meter, kilogram, second etc. kilogram per cubic meter (density) etc.

4 What is dimensional analysis?

Answer: Physical quantities having the same dimensions can only be added or subtracted.
Dimensional analysis helps us in deducing certain relations among different physical quantities
and checking the derivation, accuracy and dimensional consistency or homogeneity of various
mathematical expressions.
5 The velocity of a body is given by v = At2 + Bt + C . If v and t are expressed in SI,
what are the units of A, B and C?

Answer: Dimensional formula of velocity v = LT −1

From the principle of homogeneity, Dimensional formula of At2 , Bt , C = LT −1
The unit of A (LT −3 ) is ms−3
The unit of B (LT −2 ) is ms−2
The unit of C (LT −1 ) is ms−1

Rules for determining number of significant figures:

• All the non-zero digits are counted as significant

• All the zeroes between two non-zero digits will be counted as significant regardless of
position of decimal point or unit. Example: 200.3 has four significant digits
• In the number less than one, the zeroes before decimal and after decimal are counted as
insignificant Example: 0.002456 has four significant digits, and the starting three zeroes
are non-significant
• The terminal or trailing zeroes in a number without a decimal point are termed as non-
significant Example: 125 m = 12500cm= 125000 mm has three significant figures as the
trailing or terminal zeroes are insignificant
• The terminal zero in a number with a decimal point is considered as significant. Example:
4.700 and 0.06890 have four significant figures in each.
• Zeroes before a decimal point are counted as insignificant, but zeroes after decimal point
are counted as significant Example: 0.3240 has four significant figures (3, 2, 4 and the
last 0)
6 State the no. of significant figures in the following
(a) 6729 (b) 0.024 (c) 0.08240 (d) 6.032 (e) 4.57 × 108

Answer: (a)4 (b) 2 (c) 4 (d) 4 (e) 3
