LAB MATH ASSIGNMENT

NAME:___Pearl Woo_____________________
SCIENTIFIC NOTATION

1. Express the following as either whole numbers or exponential expressions.

6
a. 10 = 1,000,000 b. 0 . 001= 10^-3

2. Convert the following numbers to either standard notation or scientific notation.

6
a. 0 . 0056×10 = b. 0 . 078=

MEASUREMENTS

3. Fill in the following conversions:

a. 10 g = mg = ng = _ g

b. 2.5 L = mL = L= nL

LOGS AND ANTILOGS

4. Use a scientific calculator to find the log or antilog of the following numbers.

2
a. Log of 9 . 04×10 b. Anti-Log of 4. 8999

ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS

5. Solve the following equations; that is, find the value of X. Pay attention to the
units, if present.

0.45g 25cm
=
2 X=14 X 50g
a. b.

6. The cost of a particular reagent is $150 for the first 100 mg and $10 for every
additional 10 mg. If the total cost of an order is $250, how many mg were
ordered?

RATIOS AND PROPORTIONS

7. How much ethanol is present in 200 mL of a 25 % solution of ethanol?

8. The density of glycerol at 20oC is 1.26 g/mL. What is the volume of 87.0 g of
glycerol?

CONCENTRATION EXPRESSIONS

9. A mole is an expression of amount. If the concentration of a solute in a

solution is 2.00 X 10-3 moles/liter, how many moles are there in 500 mL of this
solution?

10. Molarity is an expression of concentration. The MW of NaCl is about

58.4g. Therefore, to make a 1 molar (that is, a 1 M) solution of NaCl, you
take 58.4 g of NaCl, dissolve it in water, and bring the final volume to 1 L.

If you add 29.2 g of NaCl to a total volume of 1 L, what is the final concentration
of NaCl in the solution?

DILUTIONS Courtesy of www.uvm.edu/~btessman/calc/calc1a.html

11. You need to make a 1:5 dilution of a solution. You need 10 ml of the diluted
solution. How much initial sample and diluent should you use?

12. You have a 10x TBE buffer. To run a gel, you need 500 ml of a 2x solution of
TBE. How do you make a 500 ml solution of 2x TBE buffer from the 10x
buffer?
10(x) + 2 (500 )
10x = 1000
X = 100 ml
500-100 = 400 ml
