Tutorial Week 5 PDF

This tutorial sheet provides 7 practice problems for calculating volumes of solids generated by revolving regions about axes using different methods like cylindrical shells. The problems include finding the volume of solids generated by revolving regions between curves like y=x3 and y=0 about the x-axis and y-axis, using cylindrical shells to revolve regions between curves like y=x3 and y=1 about lines, showing the volume of a sphere is 4/3πr3 by revolving a semicircle, finding the volume of a funnel by revolving the curve y=1/x, and finding the volume of a solid revolved above the x-axis and below an ellipse.

MA 112 Calculus II Tutorial Sheet 4

1. Find the volume of the solid generated when the region enclosed by the curves given
below is revolved about the (i) x-axis; and (ii) y-axis.

(a) y = x3 , x = 1 and y = 0.
(b) y = x3 − 3x2 + 2x over [0, 1].
(c) y = 9x − x2 and y = 0.
(d) x = y 2 , y = 1 and x = 0.
(e) xy = 4, and x + y = 5.

2. Use the cylindrical shell method to find the volume of the solid generated when the
region enclosed by the curves given below is revolved about the given line.

(a) y = x3 , y = 1 and x = 0 about the line y = 1.

(b) y = 1/x3 and y = 0 over [1, 2] about the line x = −1.
(c) y = x2 and y = x3 about the line x = 2.

(d) y = x, x = 0 and y = 1 about the line y = 2.

3. By revolving the semicircle y = r2 − x2 about the x-axis, show that the volume of a
sphere of radius r is V = 43 πr3 .

4. Consider the funnel formed by taking the curve y = 1/x over the interval [1, a] (where
a > 1) and rotating it round the x-axis. Find the volume of the funnel.

5. Find the volume of the solid that results when the region above the x-axis and below
the ellipse
x2 y 2
+ 2 =1 (a > 0, b > 0)
a2 b
is revolved about the x-axis.

6. (a) Find the volume V (n) of the solid generated when the region bounded by y = xn
and y = x1/n (where n is a positive even integer) is revolved about the x-axis.
(b) Find lim V (n).
n→+∞

7. Using cylindrical shell method, show that the volume of the cone generated when the
triangle with vertices (0, 0), (r, 0), (0, h), (where r > 0 and h > 0) is revolved about the
y-axis is V = 31 πr2 h.
