ST-5: Sample size tables – two-sample t-tests

The table is indexed by whether the test will be one or two-tailed, the significance level (α), the probability
of type II error (β) (the required power is (1- β)) and the ratio D=(µ1–µ2)/σ = Δ/σ. For example, for a two-
tailed test with a significance level of 0.05 and a β value of 0.1, the sample size (in each group) will be 23,
for a D value of 1.0.
