Asteroids, Meteoroids and Comets

Meteoroid, asteroids, and comets are space rocks that orbit the Sun. Meteoroids enter the Earth's atmosphere and burn up, creating meteors. Those that survive entry and hit the ground are meteorites. Asteroids orbit the Sun in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Comets originate from the Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud and have icy tails formed by solar wind as they approach the Sun.

Chapter 13 Meteoroid, Asteroid, Comet

1. Meteoroid is space rock.

2. Meteor is space rock that enter the ___________________ and burns due to friction
against air molecules.
 Meteor rain or meteor shower happens when many meteors enter the Earth at
one time.
3. Meteorite is space rock that does not completely burn up in the atmosphere and hit
the __________________

Characteristics of meteoroids
a) made up of ____________ and ____________
b) originates from debris or fragments of ______________ and ____________
c) various size : __________________________
d) surface temperature at outer space: _____________
e) orbit around the __________
f) move freely in space and influenced by ____________ of other planets due to smaller
size and mass.
g) travel at varying _________, fastest movement is 42kms -1
Chapter 13 Meteoroid, Asteroid, Comet
Characteristics of asteroids

a) made up of ____________ and ____________

b) also known as small ______________
c) originates from asteroid belts between the planets __________ and _____________
d) some asteroids orbit that are outside of the asteroid belts are such as ________, Amor
and Aten
e) various size : 1 m to ___________
f) cold surface temperature : _____________
g) orbit around the __________
h) move freely in space and influenced by ____________ of other planets
i) travel at average speed of is 25kms-1
j) the largest asteroids such as ______________ and _______________
k) collision can happen between asteroids and the Earth

Characteristics of comets

a) made up of mixture of __________, ____________ and frozen_____________

b) travel around the Sun at its own _____________of an elliptical shape
c) most of the comets originate from the ________________ belt (in the outer solar
system) and Oort Cloud
d) consists of two main parts, a __________ and a ___________
e) the _________ part can reach 250 000 km whereas the _________ part can reach
150 000 000 km
f) when comet comes closer to the Sun, it ___________ and release gas into a glowing
head
g) the tail gets longer as it is closer to the Sun
h) the tail always point away from the Sun because the _________________blows from
the Sun
Chapter 13 Meteoroid, Asteroid, Comet
Celestial bodies Meaning
Rock and metal fragments that float and move around the Sun
Large rocks and metals that surround the Sun in its own orbit
Meteoroid that enters the atmosphere of the Earth
Celestial bodies made up of water and gas that freeze into ice,
dust and rock that move around the Sun in their own orbits
Meteor that has not completely burnt out and falls to the surface
of the Earth

________________. The heat causes ____________ around the meteoroid to glow brightly.
This glowing meteoroid is called a meteor, sometimes nicknamed ____________________
.Most meteoroids that enter Earth's atmosphere __________________ before they reach the
ground. Usually, meteors will ______________ before they reach the Earth. However there are
meteors that hit the Earth, these are known as __________________. ____________ will form
as a result of meteorite impact.
