Abstract

Chernobyl was a nuclear power plant in Ukraine. The Chernobyl reactor number four exploded.

This research has been conducted to establish, what was the cause of the explosion? The impact

the explosion brought? Whether Chernobyl power plant has been revived? Whether the entire

area is a radioactive zone and if yes how dangerous it is? If those who were living in the area

now resettling back? After conducting the research I found out that, the explosion of chamber

four reactors was caused by overpressure. Thirty people died due to radiation and 350000 were

evacuated from the area. The area of incident is still radioactive up to now with the level varying

as you move away from chamber four reactors. Some of the residents are now resettling back

and even some animal are living in the area both the number of animals and people is limited.

The main purpose of this research is enable people to understand better about Chernobyl nuclear

power plant disaster that happened on 26th of April 1986, and the entire surrounding of the

power plant. All this research was conducted using quantitative research method that includes

using mobile data phone.

CHERNOBYL POWER PLANT 3

What was the cause of the explosion? The explosion was caused by overpressure of the

reaction chamber four. This is after r Stephanovich ordered the workers of the plant to use

turbines to pump the energy produced. This practice of using turbines was tested in 1985 but it

was not successful because of the auto shutdown of the chamber four. The workers were afraid

to perform the test but they were threatened to be sacked from the job by Stephanovich. They

turned off the auto shut down and before they switched off the chamber four reactors, the

pressure had already overpowered and threw away the 1000tonnes top cover of the reaction

chamber.( Davis, Scott, Valery Stepanenko, Nikolai Rivkind, Kenneth J. Kopecky, Paul

Voillequé,)

The impact the explosion made? After the explosion of chamber four reactors two

people who were workers at the plant died that very same day due to radiation poisoning. Other

twenty eight workers passed away after being exposed to radioactive rays some few years after

the incident people were being hospitalized of acute radiation syndrome. This made the

government of Ukraine to evacuate more than 350000.

Is the area a radioactive zone? After chamber four exploded more than a radius of 30km

became a radioactive zone. Chamber four being the epicenter of the radiation has higher

percentage of radiation four reactors. The entire area is one of the most radioactive places on

earth. over the past years the level has being decreasing due to radioactive decay.( Davis, S.,

Stepanenko, V., Rivkind, N., Kopecky, K. J., )

Are the evacuated people resettling back? Up to now people are resettling back to their

with the percentage level going down as original places. It has been noted that even animals are

living in the area, though both the number of animals and people are limited. The scientist

concluded that it will take many years for the area to be inhabitable.
