Assignment

1. This document contains 5 math problems related to differential geometry concepts like fundamental forms, lines of curvature, asymptotic lines, etc. for a parameterized surface. 2. The first problem asks to find the orthogonal trajectories of a given family of curves on a surface with a specified first fundamental form. 3. The second problem asks to set up an iterated double integral to calculate the area of a helicoid surface.

(Each question carries 4 marks)
1. For a regular parameterized surface 𝑟⃗(𝑢, 𝑣), (𝑢, 𝑣) ∈ ℝ2 of class 3, the 1st Fundamental
Form is given by 𝑑𝑢2 + (𝑢2 + 1)𝑑𝑣 2 . Find the family 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑐) = 0 of curves in ℝ2
which gives the orthogonal trajectory of the family defined by the differential equation
𝑢+𝑣
𝑑𝑢 − (𝑢 − 𝑣)𝑑𝑣 = 0 on the given surface.
𝑢2 +1
2. Set up the iterated double integral for the area of the helicoid 𝑟⃗(𝑢, 𝑣) = (𝑢 cos 𝑣,
𝑢 sin 𝑣, 𝑣), 0 < 𝑢 < 1, 0 < 𝑣 < 2𝜋. (Do not evaluate the iterated integral).
3. For the parameterized surface 𝑟⃗(𝑢, 𝑣) = (𝑢 + 𝑣, 𝑢 − 𝑣, 𝑢𝑣), (𝑢, 𝑣) ∈ ℝ2 , find the
principal curvatures of the surface at the point 𝑟⃗(0, 0).
4. The parameterized surface 𝑟⃗(𝑢, 𝑣), (𝑢, 𝑣) ∈ ℝ2 has 1st Fundamental Form 𝑑𝑢2 +
2
(𝑢2 + 1)𝑑𝑣 2 and 2nd Fundamental Form − 2 𝑑𝑢𝑑𝑣. Find the families 𝜑(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑐) = 0
√𝑢 +1
and 𝜓(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑐 ′ ) = 0 of curves in ℝ2 whose images on the surface are the lines of
curvature of the surface.
5. Find the curves in 𝑥𝑦-plane which are projection of the asymptotic lines on the surface
𝑧 = 𝑦 sin 𝑥 through the point (0,0,0).
