KINDS OF SENTENCES

We use different types of sentences for different purposes and we categorize them on
their purpose and there are 4 kinds of sentences which are as follows

Assertive

Imperative
kinds of
sentences
exclamatory

interrogative

Assertive sentences:
These are the most common types of sentences . they are also called as statement or
declarative sentences. They declares somethings

Eg.
1. We own a dog.
2. Harry potter is my favorite movies

Characteristics of assertive sentences


 They begin with the subject
 They can be affirmative or negative
 The punctuation that we use at the end of sentences if full stop (.)

More examples of assertive sentences


1. She doesn't like crowd places.
2. Her brother copies sounds of animals.
3. It was raining.
4. Honesty is the best policy.

Imperative sentences
An imperative sentence is a type of sentence that gives instructions or advice, and expresses a
command, an order, a direction, or a request.

Eg. open the door.

Put it down now.

Characteristic of imperative sentences


 It shown command request order
 Subject you is understood
 The punctuation used at the end of the sentences is full stop.

More examples

1. Come here, check these papers, and give me your opinion. (Order)
2. Please clean your room. (Request)
3. Jump high (command)

Exclamatory sentences

Exclamatory sentences are the sudden feeling of expression the expression can be of joy ,
wonder or sorrow

Eg. what a beautiful garden!

How beautiful the garden is

Hurray! we won the match

Characterictic of exclamatory sentences

1. They show sudden felling of expression


2. Many times they start with what a/an or how
3. The punctuation used at the end of sentence is exclamatory mark((!)

Interrogative sentences

The sentences which asks questions are known as interrogative sentences

Interrogative sentences are of two types

interrogative

start with wh words ask with auxiliaries

why may/shall/should et c

Eg. is this you pen?
name ?

Characteristic of interrogative sentences

1. They ask questions


2. They are of two types wh/yes-no
3. The punctuation used at the end of the sentence is ? question mark.
