A catalyst lowers the activation energy needed for a chemical reaction to occur by providing an alternative reaction pathway involving intermediate complexes between the catalyst and reactants. This diagram shows the catalyzed reaction pathway proceeding through a transition state complex TS'-M that is only stable when bound to the catalyst, as opposed to the higher energy uncatalyzed transition state TS. The catalyst then facilitates the conversion of substrate S to product P.

A catalyst lowers the activation energy for a chemical reaction. Here the uncatalysed
conversion of substrate S to product P passes by way of the high-energy transition state TS.
In this case the metal catalysed version goes via a different transition state TS’, which is very
unstable in the free state but becomes viable on binding to the catalyst as TS’-M.
