2.3 Parallel and Series Circuit (Lesson Plan)

The lesson plan outlines an experiment to compare the current and potential differences in series and parallel circuits, with students divided into groups to set up circuits using batteries, light bulbs, wires, and meters, make observations of bulb brightness and meter readings with all bulbs connected and one removed, then analyze the results to understand how current and potential differ between the two circuit types.

Topic:Chapter 2: Electricity (2.3 Analysing series and parallel)

Source of Teaching Material

Physics textbook form 5
Pupils’ Learning Abilities (Pre requisite knowledge) (description of class)
1. Pre-requisite knowledge of student
Students have basic knowledge of Ohm’s Law, able to identify series and parallel circuit

Teaching-learning Strategies
By using experiments as a guide for student to observe the relationship between current and potential difference of series
and parallel circuit.
Students will conduct experiment in form of group
Learning outcome:
Student will be able to compare the current and potential differences of series circuits and parallel circuits

Teaching Aids Time

Teaching- Learning Activities / allocation

1. Activities Preparation
A 、Preparation before lesson
(1)Teacher:
i. Prepare apparatus and material for experiment
ii. Guide group leader in conducting experiment
(2)Pupils:
i. Read experiment procedure before class
ii. Group leader will conduct the experiment with teacher once before
class

B、Preparation for teaching process

(1)Set Induction:
[DIAGRAM] Video regarding parallel and series circuit
Student need to observe the difference through watching the video
Question 1: What’s the difference between two circuits?
[Expected answer: Brightness of the bulb]
Question 2: Why the brightness of the bulb different? 10minutes
[Expected answer: Due to different current pass through or potential
difference]
Question 3: How can we identify the relationship of current and potential
difference in parallel and series circuit?
[This is the objective of lesson for this session]
2. Development
2.1 Objective of today lesson
1. Compare the current and potential difference of series and parallel
circuit

2.2 Before experiment: 5mins

1. Students divided into their own group
2. Group leader will divide the task among members
(Group leaders will not conduct the experiment, he will only help when
their group member face problems)
3. Discuss precaution of experiment

2.3 During experiment: 25mins

Teacher’s task
1. Observe student’s experimental skills
2. Make sure group leaders do their responsibility
3. Time reminder

Student’s task
1. Observe and record the results of experiment
2. List out problems that they noticed during experiment

2.4 After experiment: 20mins

1. Students discuss in group to interpret and analyze data that they
recorded.
2. Each group write down their observation and discussion on the white
board

3. Consolidation, Evaluation 10mins

3.1 Compare and contrast the result
1. Analyze why there are difference among student’s results (if any)
2. Analyze the current and potential difference of parallel and series circuit

3.2 Improve experiment

1. Discuss among student what are the problem they noticed during
experiment and how to improve them.

4. Conclusion 10mins
4.1 Conclusion of the experiment
1. Bring out conclusion from the result that carried out by the groups
2. Relationship between current and potential difference of parallel and
series circuit is as shown as below:
Aim: Study the relationship of current, I and potential difference, V, of Series and Parallel
Circuits.

Apparatus/Materials :
Light bulbs (2), Batteries, Wires, Light bulb holder, Battery holder, Ammeter (3), Voltmeter (3)

Procedures :
1. Prepare the electric circuit as shown in the Diagram 1.1 (a)

(a) Current and potential difference in (b) Current and potential difference in
series circuit parallel circuit
Diagram 1.1 Study the current and potential difference

2. Observe the brightness of the bulbs in each the circuit. Record the ammeter and voltmeter
readings in the Table 1.1.
3. Unscrew one of the bulbs. Observe the remaining bulbs in the circuit. Record the new
readings of the ammeter and voltmeter in the Table 1.2.
4. Repeat procedure 1 by connecting the ammeter and voltmeter in parallel as shown in
Diagram 1.1 (b)
5. Observe the brightness of the bulbs. Record the ammeter and voltmeter readings in the
Table 1.1.
6. Unscrew one of the bulbs. Observe the remaining bulbs in the circuit. Record the new
readings of the ammeter and voltmeter in the Table 1.2.

Discussions :
1. Compare the value of current, I, and potential difference, V, in (a) series circuit and (b)
parallel circuit when all the bulbs are connected.
2. Compare the value of current, I, and potential difference, V, in (a) series circuit and (b)
parallel circuit when one of the bulb is unscrewed.
3. Compare the brightness of the bulb in series and parallel circuit. What is the relationship
between the brightness of the bulbs with the current flow through it?
4. What is the differences between series and parallel circuit?
