Structural Design and Drawing (CE-422), Dr. Aslam Faqeer Mohammad

The document discusses the calculation of base shear and distribution of lateral forces in the longer direction of a building with a dual lateral load resisting system. It provides parameters such as story height, weight and calculates the lateral force applied to each story based on the total base shear and weight distribution. Diagrams of story shear and overturning moment are also presented.

Sample Problems
• Seismic Base Shear and lateral forces at story level
The 10-story standard office building (assuming essential facility) is located in Karachi situated on Stiff soil (SD). The
structural system of the building is dual system with concrete shear wall and intermediate moment resisting frame
in longer direction. Whereas, in the shorter direction only intermediate moment resisting frame is provided.
Determine the base shear and the earthquake force on each story in shorter and longer directions? Assume the
first story is 12ft high remaining all are 10ft high. In addition to that Seismic weight at roof level = 60psf and at
floor level = 120psf

Information Provided:
Required:
1. Base Shear (V)
2. Earthquake forces (Fx)
