Assignment - Fluid Mechanics

This document contains 5 problems related to fluid mechanics: 1) Estimating the minimum air velocity needed to balance two spheres of different surface roughness attached to a balance beam. 2) Calculating the flow rate of gasoline flowing from a larger diameter pipe into a smaller diameter pipe. 3) Determining the flow rate through a pipe connecting two water reservoirs of different heights, with and without given friction factor and relative roughness values. 4) Calculating the pressure a pump must produce to generate a given volume flow rate through a smooth horizontal pipe attached to a reservoir, accounting for frictional losses. 5) Calculating the speed required of a water jet hitting a hinged square gate to balance it vertically against a

Problem 1

Air flows past two equal sized spheres (one rough, one smooth) that are attached to
the arm of a balance as is indicated. With U = 0, the beam is balanced. Estimate the
minimum air velocity for which balance will be maintained (i.e. no tendency to
rotate). Note: The balance arms have negligible drag, and the chart below provides
drag data for both smooth and rough spheres.

Problem 2

Gasoline flows from a 0.3-m diameter pipe in which the pressure is 300 kPa into a
0.15-m diameter pipe in which the pressure is 120 kPa. If the pipes are horizontal and
viscous effects are negligible, determine the flow rate.

Problem 3

Two water reservoirs of height h1 = 60 m and h2 = 30 m are connected by a pipe

that is 0.35 m in diameter. The exit of the pipe is submerged at distance h3 = 8 m
from the reservoir surface.

a) Determine the flow rate through the pipe if the pipe is 80 m long and the
friction factor f = 0.004. The pipe inlet is set flush with the wall.
b) If the relative roughness e/D=0.004, determine the friction factor and flow
rate.
Problem 4

An L = 330 ft. length of smooth horizontal pipe is attached to a large constant-level

reservoir containing water of depth d = 3 ft. A pump is attached to the end of the
reservoir at a volume flow rate of Q = 3 ft3/s, what pressure must the pump produce
at the pipe to generate this flow rate, if frictional losses lead to a loss of head? The
inside diameter of the smooth pipe is D = 6 in.

Problem 5

A square gate is 1m long on each side and hinged at the bottom. On one side the
gate holds back a 1m deep body of water. On the other side, a 5cm diameter water
jet hits the gate at a height of 1 m. Calculate the speed V of the jet required to hold
the gate vertical.
