materials will also be studied experimentally as well as numerically .

2.5.13. Aeroelastic dynamics of insect flight:
The study of insect flight is fascinating not only due to the associated unsteady aerodynamic
principles, but also for its practical applications in the development of micro aerial vehicles.
Despite wing flexibility has been recognized as an important factor in the aerodynamics of
insect flight, majority of the experimental and numerical studies have completely neglected the
coupled aeroelastic interaction. The objective of this project is to perform fluid-structure
interaction (FSI) studies on idealized flapping wing kinematics to understand the influence of
wing flexibility on the aerodynamic force production
2.5.14. Multiscale modeling of fluid-poroelastic structure interaction:
In nature, poroelastic surface coatings are omnipresent; these are observed in the form of hairs,
feathers, and other filamentous features. These dense and anisotropic coatings interact
favorably with the surrounding fluid flow and help the animals to achieve energy-efficient
locomotion by reducing the drag force acting on them. Understanding these nature-inspired
fluid-poroelastic structure interaction (FPSI) are crucial to design biomimetic surfaces that find
potential applications in aerospace, automobile, and energy sector. The objective of this project
is to develop multi scale finite element methods to simulate the interaction of incompressible
flow with poroelastic surfaces.
