Vessel Side Shell Check Calculations

This document provides calculations to check the local strength of a vertically stiffened bulkhead on a barge or vessel under a given vertical load. It calculates the bearing compressive stress on the bulkhead and compares it to the allowable stress to check for adequate bearing strength. It also calculates the effective cross-sectional properties of the vertical stiffeners including area, neutral axis, and moment of inertia to check the axial capacity of the stiffeners is sufficient to resist the distributed load from the bulkhead. Input parameters describing the bulkhead geometry, stiffener details, and material properties are provided to perform the calculations.

BULKHEAD STRENGTH CHECK (Vertically Stiffened Panels)

File: 23.0 Bhd-long-stiff.xmcd (Version 1.1)

PROJECT :- SIDE SHELL CHECK

1.0 SCOPE

This worksheet verifies the local strength of a vertically stiffened bulkhead of the barge/vessel in bearing and
the axial capacity of the vertical stiffeners of the bulkhead, for a given load.

The following are the considerations in this regard.

1. The check for the global strength of the bulkhead is not a part of this worksheet.
2. The local strength of the bulkhead in bearing is checked considering the bulkhead to be consisting of
long rectangular uniaxially stiffened panels subjected to in-plane end compression.

3.2 Check for Axial Compression Capacity of the Vertical Stiffeners

Vertical stiffeners are considered to form a column section in combination with the attached plating. The load on
the bulkhead is considered to be distributed between a number of such column sections. The capacity of each
such section is estimated here.
