Tutorial 3 Solution

This document contains the solutions to tutorial problems for a heat and mass transfer course. It provides the step-by-step workings and calculations to determine things like heat transfer rates through walls and cylinders, as well as currents in conducting materials, based on given properties like conductivity, dimensions, and temperature differences. The problems cover a range of steady-state conduction scenarios involving one, two, and three dimensions.

SOLUTION of TUTORIAL 03 – Steady State Conduction – Multi Dimensions

1. D = 35-10 = 25 cm, L = 5 cm, A = (0.25)2 = 0.0625 m2

k = 1.04 W/m oC , Swall = A/L = 1.25 , Sedge = 0.59D = 0.135
Scorner = 0.15L = 7.5 x 10-3 , S = 2(1.25) + 4 (0.135) + 8 (7.5x10-3) = 9.18
Q = k S T = 1.04 x 9.18 x ( 500 – 80 ) = 4009.8 W

2. S = 4 r = 1.257 , k = 0.038 W/mK

q = ( 1.257) ( 0.038 ) ( 170-20 ) = 7.165 W
