Module in General Physics 2

The document discusses temperature scales and conversions between Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin and Rankine scales. It provides definitions and key points about each scale, such as the Celsius scale using 0° for water's freezing point and 100° for its boiling point. Formulas are given to convert between scales, along with examples of conversions between different scales. An activity at the end asks students to solve temperature conversion problems and express their answers in boxes.

General Physics 2

Temperature is a measurement of hotness or coldness expressed in terms of any of several

arbitrary scales and indicating the direction in which heat will spontaneously flow.
Temperature is measured using a device called a Thermometer.

Temperature Scale

 Celsius Scale
It is also called as “Centigrade Temperature Scale”.
Scale based on 0˚ for the freezing point of water and 100 ˚ for the boiling point of water.
It is invented in 1742 by the Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius.
5
˚C = (˚F – 32)
9

 Fahrenheit Scale
It is based on 32 ˚ for the freezing point of water and 212 ˚ for the boiling point of
water.
This scale is invented by German physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, which uses an
interval divided into 180 parts.
9
˚F = ( x ˚C) + 32
5

 Kelvin Scale
Also known as “Absolute Scale”
The Kelvin temperature scale was the brainchild of Belfast-born British inventor and
scientist William Thomson — also known as Lord Kelvin.
In this scale, the freezing point of water is 273 ˚K and the boiling point of water is 373 ˚K.
The temperature scale is commonly used in laboratories and in industry.
T K = T C + 273

 Rankine Scale
5
The basic unit of the scale, the degree Rankine (˚R), is of the Kelvin.
9

The temperature scale is named after the Scottish engineer and physicist William John
Macquorn Rankine , who proposed it in 1859.
In this scale, the freezing point of water is 460 ˚R and its boiling point is 672 ˚R.
T R = T F + 460

EXAMPLES
1. What is the Celsius equivalent of 80˚F?
Solution:

2. What is the Fahrenheit equivalent of 80 ˚C?

Solution:
9
TF = T + 32
5 F

TF = (80˚C) +32
5
9 80
TF = ( ) + 32
5 1
T F = 9 (16) + 32
T F = 144 + 32

T F =176 ˚F

3. Nitrogen boils at -196 ˚C. What is the temperature on the absolute scale?
Solution:
T K =  T C + 273

T K = -196 ˚C +273

T K = 77 K

T K = 77 ˚K

4. Ethyl alcohol freezes at -133 ˚F. What are these temperatures on the Rankine scale?
Solution:
(a) -133 ˚F to Rankine
T R =  T F + 460

T R = -133 ˚F +460

T R = 327 R

T R = 327 ˚R

5. The surface temperature of the sun is about 6000 ˚K. What is the Celsius equivalent of
this temperature?
Solution:
T C =  T K - 273

T C = 6000 ˚K - 273

T C = 5727 C

T C = 5727 ˚C
